Yeah, but do they like Huey Lewis and the News?
Hey Paulina!
I’m old. What is a “sigma film bro”?
Sigma nuts, haHAA
Ah the stupid wolf shit. Thanks I was hung up on the film part. So “basic person more murdery than loner nerd”? Isn’t that like the whole point of American Psycho?
The joke is leaning more on the OCD/narcissistic characteristics of Patrick Bateman than the murdery part. Like, having a ridiculously tedious self-care routine due to vanity (or self-consciousness, take your pick).
I think it’s kinda weird that you used the whole initialism for only one of those disorders. You could have used it for both or neither, but you didn’t.
It was for brevity and clarity. People are very familiar with hearing “OCD” used casually, but “NPD” would have sounded too specific and clinical compared to “narcissistic” as a character trait.
Neil Patrick Derris?
As a random comment reader, you are correct in your assessment. I can deduce NPD is “narcissistic personality disorder” from having read “narcissistic” in your previous comment but it’s much less familiar than OCD.
I think we all have a duty to communicate ethically moreso than to communicate clearly. People are used to hearing the partial version of NPD because of cultural stigma. We know more than them, and that means we have a duty to educate them.
We know more than them
Speak for yourself bozo
I think we all have a duty to communicate ethically moreso than to communicate clearly.
Uh, the whole point of communication is clarity, otherwise you’re just making noises. Communication requires that the recipient understands the intended message.
I’ve never in my life seen an initialism for narcissism.
NPD. Go read psychology textbooks until you’ve got a basic grasp of mental health verbiage.
What does that have to do with upper middle class girls with a green juice on tiktok?
Just because it’s a thing in psychology textbooks doesn’t mean it’s part of the common vernacular. OCD definitely is, but NPD isn’t.
Hell if I know. I’ve heard the term “Sigma Grindset” before, but it can’t be tied to what I’m thinking of.
You’d have to be the worst workaholic ever to be applying Six Sigma/Agile stuff to your personal life. It’s tied to the alpha/beta wolf bollocks. “Sigma” wolves exist outside of the normal order but are on par with “alphas”.
Basically, grifters wanted to expand their customer base to include lonely people lmao
You’d have to be the worst workaholic ever to be applying Six Sigma/Agile stuff to your personal life.
It feels weird to see Six Sigma implicitly paired with Agile instead of Lean. That said, Six Sigma is generally concerned with much higher quantities than are found in personal life, so yeah that would be nuts. Although, Agile and Lean do both have stuff that could be reasonably applied to personal life.
I mean, putting something on your shopping list when it’s running low is basically just Kanban.
I think (hope) sigma grindset is a joke, in the way that it makes fun of entrepreneur influencers by being so out of line it can’t possibly be true. I have however no proof to offer.
I remember it starting back on reddit in response to the whole “alpha” thing. The point was to goad the alphabros to ask “what’s sigma” then hit them with “sigma nuts.” They would get so pissed off, there was a whole subreddit for barbaric sigma memes mocking them and posting screenshots of sigma nuts.
Then they started taking it seriously, and the joke shifted to asking what they thought sigma meant, and the subreddit started posting screenshots of the insane replies.
Then, people started taking it TOO seriously, and everything went downhill.
Just like any good joke, someone’s going to take it too literal. Sigma has been around so long that it’s heavily in the category of, “satire that some didn’t realize was satire and now it’s unironically used”.
No, they aren’t. It is largely men who commit the most murder incl serial killing. We just had a killer get caught in Arkansas that was a man. Also Travis Decker. Then some kind of unsolved quadruple murders in Tennessee recently too. Weird way to hate on women with delusional lies and then encourage incels to attack them by portraying women as the real evil - classic vulnerable narcissist move.

Among men and women collective narcissism was associated with tolerance of domestic violence against women, whereas national in-group satisfaction was associated with rejection of violence against women.
A stunning example of missing the point.
You’re both seeing the character differently. It wasn’t only about the murders for the OP. Bateman, in a superficial society, tries to be something special among his peers through meaningless acts (most notably the business cards scene, but even his self-care and self-improvement are ultimately means to the end to be better compared to others). It’s not that he isn’t closer to men than women - he or rather his archetype generally is - but that for these two subgroups within the genders, it’s reversed. (Whether the statement is correct or not is a topic for debate)
Also, he possibly isn’t killing anyone at all - at least directly.
Then bring up Narcissus. Bateman is intentionally a serial killer and not removed from his murders whatsoever. Eg “you fuck a snake one time and then everyone calls you snakefucker” - we all think of Bateman as a serial killer first.
Also, men engage in tons of fucking physical “self care,” eg testosterone, doping, weightlifting, Joe Rogan, carnivore diet, Andrew Tate, looksmaxxing, rogaine, meth, coke, adderall. Men literally die from ODing on drugs to look better. Women do too, but they aren’t “more obsessed” with their looks compared to their male peers. It’s a genuinely stupid premise that only feeds into hating women narratives
Maybe I misunderstood it but I got the impression that Bateman believes he’s a serial killer, but he’s not the most reliable so it could all be fantasy. Maybe I read too much into it. But yeah American Psycho is profoundly misogynistic and I get the impression Brett Easton Ellis is too
i dont think it’s misogynist to write a book about characters that are misogynistic, especially since the point is to criticize them
Okay, but it’s not about the nuance of the book itself, it’s again, that we all know Bateman as a serial killer for the purpose of the meme. Eg when we talk about Frankenstein, the readers know we mean Frankenstein’s monster but everyone just refers to him as Frankenstein himself.
Yes, for the sake of the meme, they used Bateman as an inflammatory example, on purpose, to trigger people sensitive to the topic. This MO has been around for decades, and you fell for it like it’s your first time on the internet.
That does nothing to negate that everyone knows Bateman as a serial killer, and your bad faith appeal to emotion fallacy is pathetic.
Is this your first time on the internet, that you are unaware people can critically think, have opinions, and write them on a discussion board about an original post? That’s the entire format of Lemmy lol
But nah, you just want to be a shithead to women which is what this is actually about. Go fuck yourself.
I also got the impression that the murders werent real.
i think the post was more about how shallow and consumerist patrick bateman is and how shallow some women can be. a lot of the movie (haven’t read the novel) goes into his routines, his self-care and the idolization of brands, expensive things, status, money, looks and appearance.
How are sigma film bros above this?
They lack the commitment and the personal investment… which doesn’t put them above it, which is why the the post might be offensive to them. Hence the two hornet nests remark
How do you know that? Weightlifting and performance enhancers and carnivore diet are extremely popular among misogynists and Andrew Tate types, specifically because they believe in might makes right. It part of why they harm women - because they feel like being stronger entitles them to that.
I can’t help but feel you’ve missed the entire intent of this post and I don’t think there is anything anyone could do or say to get it across to you due to your brick walling.
Projection on your part. But I accept your loss.
Ps it’s called stonewalling and that’s not what I’m doing, I am simply supporting my argument and you have no rebuttal and want to externalize that onto me to control me
See? No point in trying on my end.
You forgot Huey Lewis.

Is a Girl - Reagan Era serial killer
The mind of the “Sigma” Male is fascinating.
If I saw a dude in pastel athleisure holding a green juice- maybe I’m giving away the population density 'round here- but I think I’d do a triple-take.
I’d check my calendar to make sure I wasn’t in the 80s. But otherwise, idk, seems like a normal California summer to me.
Not sure I understand what you want to say here
