The joke is leaning more on the OCD/narcissistic characteristics of Patrick Bateman than the murdery part. Like, having a ridiculously tedious self-care routine due to vanity (or self-consciousness, take your pick).

It was for brevity and clarity. People are very familiar with hearing “OCD” used casually, but “NPD” would have sounded too specific and clinical compared to “narcissistic” as a character trait.

As a random comment reader, you are correct in your assessment. I can deduce NPD is “narcissistic personality disorder” from having read “narcissistic” in your previous comment but it’s much less familiar than OCD.

I think we all have a duty to communicate ethically moreso than to communicate clearly. People are used to hearing the partial version of NPD because of cultural stigma. We know more than them, and that means we have a duty to educate them.

Hell if I know. I’ve heard the term “Sigma Grindset” before, but it can’t be tied to what I’m thinking of.
You’d have to be the worst workaholic ever to be applying Six Sigma/Agile stuff to your personal life.

It’s tied to the alpha/beta wolf bollocks. “Sigma” wolves exist outside of the normal order but are on par with “alphas”.

It feels weird to see Six Sigma implicitly paired with Agile instead of Lean. That said, Six Sigma is generally concerned with much higher quantities than are found in personal life, so yeah that would be nuts. Although, Agile and Lean do both have stuff that could be reasonably applied to personal life.

I mean, putting something on your shopping list when it’s running low is basically just Kanban.

I remember it starting back on reddit in response to the whole “alpha” thing. The point was to goad the alphabros to ask “what’s sigma” then hit them with “sigma nuts.” They would get so pissed off, there was a whole subreddit for barbaric sigma memes mocking them and posting screenshots of sigma nuts.

Then they started taking it seriously, and the joke shifted to asking what they thought sigma meant, and the subreddit started posting screenshots of the insane replies.

Then, people started taking it TOO seriously, and everything went downhill.

No, they aren’t. It is largely men who commit the most murder incl serial killing. We just had a killer get caught in Arkansas that was a man. Also Travis Decker. Then some kind of unsolved quadruple murders in Tennessee recently too. Weird way to hate on women with delusional lies and then encourage incels to attack them by portraying women as the real evil - classic vulnerable narcissist move.

    https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11199-020-01193-3

Among men and women collective narcissism was associated with tolerance of domestic violence against women, whereas national in-group satisfaction was associated with rejection of violence against women.

You’re both seeing the character differently. It wasn’t only about the murders for the OP. Bateman, in a superficial society, tries to be something special among his peers through meaningless acts (most notably the business cards scene, but even his self-care and self-improvement are ultimately means to the end to be better compared to others). It’s not that he isn’t closer to men than women - he or rather his archetype generally is - but that for these two subgroups within the genders, it’s reversed. (Whether the statement is correct or not is a topic for debate)

Then bring up Narcissus. Bateman is intentionally a serial killer and not removed from his murders whatsoever. Eg “you fuck a snake one time and then everyone calls you snakefucker” - we all think of Bateman as a serial killer first.

Also, men engage in tons of fucking physical “self care,” eg testosterone, doping, weightlifting, Joe Rogan, carnivore diet, Andrew Tate, looksmaxxing, rogaine, meth, coke, adderall. Men literally die from ODing on drugs to look better. Women do too, but they aren’t “more obsessed” with their looks compared to their male peers. It’s a genuinely stupid premise that only feeds into hating women narratives

Maybe I misunderstood it but I got the impression that Bateman believes he’s a serial killer, but he’s not the most reliable so it could all be fantasy. Maybe I read too much into it. But yeah American Psycho is profoundly misogynistic and I get the impression Brett Easton Ellis is too

Okay, but it’s not about the nuance of the book itself, it’s again, that we all know Bateman as a serial killer for the purpose of the meme. Eg when we talk about Frankenstein, the readers know we mean Frankenstein’s monster but everyone just refers to him as Frankenstein himself.

How do you know that? Weightlifting and performance enhancers and carnivore diet are extremely popular among misogynists and Andrew Tate types, specifically because they believe in might makes right. It part of why they harm women - because they feel like being stronger entitles them to that.
