and veganism isn’t just a blind disagreement with eating one kingdom of biology, it’s a means to reduce harm, suffering, exploitation and killing. of course other kingdoms are alive, and in case we make it and sometime in the future we can somehow find viable, plentiful, cheap dead sources of all our nutrients there might be people who want to switch to those exclusively, but right now i think it’s a fairly measured movement.

i know, that’s why i mentioned it. i don’t mind losing out on games with kernel anticheat. if you really do want a big battlefield shooter, battlefield 4 is still an option. if you want something smaller then maybe you can try the finals, which also breaks free from the hero shooter genre a little. if you do want a hero shooter then marvel rivals also works on linux. i don’t think you’re missing out on a lot. maybe battle royale shooters? fortnite, pubg and cod warzone won’t run on linux, but to some that’s also a benefit.

i don’t know if you’ve ever seen professional competitive fps gamers, but their aim and hearing can be insane. they’re almost equivalent to an aimbot. They can react in a hundred milliseconds and then lock on a head to such an extent that it really does look like a lock-on. When the enemy moves very fast they can still predict enemy movement based on their player character’s animation, keeping the lock-on. Flying enemies are at their mercy as well, because they fly in a predictable arc. They can perfectly counter weapon recoil patterns because they’ve trained on them. I know there’s the valve approach of banning cheaters based on suspicious behavior, but at an extremely high level it’s almost impossible to separate cheaters from extremely good players, especially if the cheating gets more subtle. I really do dislike kernel anticheat and I use linux myself, but there are reasons for it.

i think the post was more about how shallow and consumerist patrick bateman is and how shallow some women can be. a lot of the movie (haven’t read the novel) goes into his routines, his self-care and the idolization of brands, expensive things, status, money, looks and appearance.

(for those unaware: there are tools built by cellebrite and other companies that can dump the internal storage of your phone and decrypt its contents without your consent. they’re in use by most police in the US at least, probably other countries as well and definitely airports. They can hack just about every single phone, except for maybe the newest iphone with a really long pin and advanced protection enabled, and recent google pixels with grapheneos.)

reading is great. i don’t know how to put it, but if you compare the dune novel and the new dennis villeneuve movies you’ll see major differences, and in my opinion to the detriment of the movies. the dune novel is very focused on character’s thoughts and ideas. those thoughts and ideas can’t really easily be expressed in a movie, not with explicit verbalization (because the novel’s audiobook is 24 hours long) and not with best-effort facial expressions either. in dune’s case the movie is also very interested in spectacle and explosions and murder and visual drama, and while the novel is of course also very dramatic it’s a very different kind of dramatic. frank herbert’s novel is very interested in the world and its mechanics and its citizens in a way the movies don’t want to or can’t be.

there are definitely accessibility issues with some novels, and some novels that have critical acclaim only really become interesting with a lot of prior reading, but i do really like it. in my case i also take public transit daily, and it’s great to be able to just whip out an ereader and read something for twenty minutes.

and if you’re fed up with streaming services offering a worse selection of movies and tv shows every year, or with seemingly the general state of movies and tv worsening every year, novels don’t really have that issue. there are definitely still differences in quality, but you can read top 100 series in whatever genre you like for decades, and by the time you’re done you’ll find there are another twenty or more new series in that list. personal recommendations are also more interesting, because there are just so many novels to discover. someone whose reading opinion you might appreciate may have read hundreds of completely different novels than you. with movies and tv you probably won’t get recommendations for anything you weren’t really aware of before.
