Top panel: man smiling, caption reads “me clicking an ich iel post”. Bottom panel: man sad, caption reads “then remembering I can’t read German”.

His ESB documentary of the empress Sisi was pretty good though

Life’s too short to learn german. – Mark Twain
Das Leben ist zu kurz um Deutsch zu lernen. – Oscar WildeWait, Oscar Wilde spoke German?
From their early childhood the Wilde boys had a French nanny and a German governess, so that they grew up speaking German as well as French.
Oh damn… I mean, yeah I totally knew that?!
I mean if one reads his stuff it’s rather obvious he must have had a German governess.
It certainly isn’t surprising to learn
Was ist ein “governess”?
Well colour me surprised as well xD
!rance@jlai.lu (French shitpost comm)
!wir_iel@feddit.org (German leftist shitpost comm, the joke is instead of “me_irl” it’s “us_irl”)
Just had a look. !wir_iel@feddit.org is a bit more than just leftist. It would be similar to calling Trump center right.

I can hardly understand it yet it enthuses me so
I can identify. Sometimes I check the comments to see if someone asked for an English translation.
Always feel free to do so yourself! I’m always happy to see foreigners interested in our culture
Cool. I will.
You can’t always figure it out, but German is so similar to English you can sometimes get the gist of it.
Exactly, for example, “ich bin laden” pretty transparently translates roughly to “I am loaded with accusations of lying underground with an air pipe and a fan”
I should learn it. I spent a few hours there on my way to Afghanistan. Beautiful country.
Sometimes you dont need to read to understand
Sometimes you gotta bleed to know
But that’s the fun, slowly and painfully learning deutsch from memes
Fellas, is it possible to learn the Deutsche language just from ich iel?
Well, it’s not as quite bad as learning English from !i_itrl@feddit.org.
Fick. Mir auch…

Thats why I blocked the whole community.
If I did that I’d have missed this gem.
No idea what it says but Lego meme!
The meme is a reference to a popular German YouTube channel, called “Held der Steine” (basically translates as “Hero of Bricks”).
On the channel, a guy shows off building block sets which you can then also buy in his accompanying shop. Up until a few years ago, it was almost exclusively Lego sets. Then Lego sent him a mail that his channel logo, which contained a Lego-like brick shape, violated the Lego trademark.
At a later point, they also demanded videos of him to be taken down where he had colloquially referred to building block sets from other manufacturers as “lego”, as we often do in German. And yeah, this did not go down well, so now the guy mostly shows off building block sets from other manufacturers and frequently highlights how insanely expensive Lego is in comparison.
Don’t forget he also highlights the bad quality in comparison to the price.
It’s not like translation is hard these days, but I will say it’s rare I do it for ich_iel myself as well. In this case the meme says:
- I’m suing you!
- World, greetings. I’m the hero of the stones, in Frankfurt am Main (a city), in the heart of Europe, in my wonderful little shop, on a fantastic day, and look what I’ve brought you.
But the lazy in me doesn’t want to type it out on another site. Especially on mobile where I can’t pull it up side by side.
And then there’s the ß and ü ö ä and so on. Glad I have most of the keys on my keyboard, but on a mobile device? That does sound like too much effort indeed.
Unexpected Keyboard is best!
I should look into that. Is it on f-droid or play store? The way I’d write German letters on my android now is just swiping to the side to switch keyboard layout from Danish or English to German as I have that set up, but that keyboard does look interesting.
EDIT: Ok, found it both places. And it’s very cool. I should’ve been using that for ages instead of the default Samsung keyboard, it’s so much easier to get special characters. Only gripe is the movement key being right next to send, a risky position. Most android keyboards just allow you to long-press on characters to type similar characters. So for example, on my Samsung keyboard, if I hold “O” for a second I get a popup with 15 o-like characters. You can do that with all characters that have similar characters. “ß” is under “s”, “ä” under “a”, and so on.
You can just use Google Lens? No typing involved.
