On this day in 1913, the Dublin Lock-Out began as hundreds of tram workers went out on strike, growing into one of most significant industrial disputes in Irish history. It involved ~20,000 workers and 300 colluding employers, and led to the founding of the Irish Citizen Army (ICA) to protect worker demonstrations.
In the years leading up to the strike, the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union (ITGWU) had been seeking to unionize and radicalize the Irish workforce. Founded by socialist revolutionary James Larkin in 1908, the ITGWU was one of the first Irish unions that catered to both skilled and unskilled workers.
In July 1913, three hundred businesses (led by capitalist William Martin Murphy) agreed to not allow the ITGWU to unionize the Dublin workforce. Murphy dismissed hundreds of workers of suspected of union membership soon after.
Many employers in Dublin then locked out their own employees, affecting tens of thousands of Irish workers, many of whom were already the poorest in the United Kingdom.
After outbreaks of violence between striking workers and strike-breakers occurred, James Connolly, Larkin and ex-British Army Captain Jack White formed a worker’s militia, the Irish Citizen Army, to protect workers’ demonstrations.
The lock-out concluded in early 1914, when the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Britain rejected Larkin and Connolly’s request for a sympathetic strike. Most workers, many of whom were on the brink of starvation, went back to work and signed pledges not to join the ITGWU, which was further weakened when Larkin fled to the United States and James Connolly was executed following the 1916 Easter Rising.
Many of the blacklisted workers joined the British Army, having no other source of pay to support their families, and quickly found themselves in the trenches of World War I. ITGWU eventually recovered and gained strength after WWI; by 1920 the ITGWU was Ireland’s largest union with 120,000 members, compared with its pre-war peak of 24,135 at the start of January 1913.

I dont wanna fedpost and I have my qualms about MLs and cops and state sanctioned violence but everyday I begin to realize that some people are just gonna have to go
Like there are so many brain broken ragepigs swallowed up by the hate virus that are too far gone
Wu Tang aftershow I got paid to work was great. It was only Ghostface from Wu Tang with a local big band jazz backing him. He performed the hits, CREAM and stuff like that. Me and all the jazz people were disappointed that he didn’t play anything off Sour Soul, his album with Badbadnotgood. I know it’s only jazz people that like that album though, it got slammed by critics and I don’t get it.
Anyways, the real highlight of the show were all the local performers they were putting on. First rapper that went up was a black woman, and she was very talented. There were actually a surprising number of women MCs throughout the night and they were very talented, albeit nothing groundbreaking. The best group I saw was this aggressive, almost industrial rap duo that happened “early” (like 12:30 at night) into the event and they were great. I got the first lady on Instagram and got a small flyer for the duo, I’m excited to hear more of them!
It’s kind of crazy looking up an actress ypu liked in a film one time and finding out on her Wikipedia page that there’s a theory she was murdered by her husband and the cops covered it up
It amuses me that “dwarf games” is a Steam tag. Deep Rock Galactic and Dwarf Fortress are both tagged as dwarf games. Is there a tag for elf games? Orc games? Why do the dwarfs get special treatment?
I wish I was tall. So much fashion sucks for me. I look like a dumbass in high waisted dress pants but I wanna wear them

I’m playing FF7 Rebirth for the first time and have so thoughts and opinions about both Remake and Rebirth that I could write an giant ass review/analysis about them
Buuuut I don’t know if Hexbear really wants a big ass game series review here or if this is the right place for it
Met an old friend I haven’t seen in a long time and she was being very sweet and earnest about how much she cares about me at the end. Which means a lot because showing emotion means she can not longer be buried in a WASP cemetery

Read the bobobo manga as a kid, but at the time I didnt know you were supposed to read then right to left. Still made just as much sense both ways.
Thing I tried on q co worker that worked: we were talking about ls comedy shows we liked and he brought up Broad City which I did like for the first 2 seasons and then it slowly became the embodiment of a lot of what I hate about people my age. So I decided id take what I thought wss gentle and said the birthright episode turned me off. He replied, ‘well, they dont hide that they’re jewish’ as if that means they need to make an episode about going on the ziomist breeding program trip is in the Torah or at least the Talmud. Instead of explaining i just said ‘that’s antisemitic’ and he dropped it. So…try it out. He didnt learn anything but I didnt have to explain a LOT of stuff I would prefer not to talk about in an open kirchen where customers can hear, just from a not wanting to get fired angle.
Maybe I could ignore being a Loser who Listens to Machines for “coding” but I’ve basically lost all patience for machine generated prose/technical writing and I’m going to make sure it’s loudly known how much of a AI;DR it is.
Imagine starting a personal blog and you don’t even bother to include your own narrative voice. BE CRINGE, have misspellings in published posts, use coarse and profane language god fucking dammit.
