I’m a 21 year old trans woman living in the Carribean. Due to both the the extreme homophobia where I live and just generally unsafe neighboors hoods across where I live. I don’t even feel safe coming out to friends or family because not only would I be kicked out, direct violence against gay people (trans people are just considered gay they don’t care enough to make a distiction) is extremly normalized i would also likly lose my job if anyone found out since my country is small enough that everyone basically knows each other.
for these reasons and others I want to permanently move to another country and continue my transistion, while doing so as secretly as possible. I’ve been searching on the internet for a while but after a plan I had to study temorarily in another country on scholarship while trying to get citizen ship their fell through I don’t really now what to do or where to go from her. I have an Associates degree in electronics enginnering and am a licenced electrician though my current job requires neither skill but I also have adhd autism and a non visible physical disability that is short makes me constantly tired and have headaches If i dont take my meds every day. Due to my salary being small while having to constantly buy medication saving is difficult but not impossible as long as i don’t have unexpected expenses. Basically I just want some advice on where should i go, about how much money do I need to save before I go, and what that general process like? Ive been searching online bust most advice is either for americans or extremely vague. If anyone can help me I woulkd be extremely greatful?
It could be worth trying to reach out to Rainbow Railroad. They might be able to help you out. https://www.rainbowrailroad.org/
I think for NZ you’d fall into our skilled worker visa thing, possibly also or asylum criteria.
Or government had almost everything online, so you can probably find it what you need there.
I am sorry for the troubles you are in, hang in there.
I would say you should start by looking at visa, visa requirements and decide on a path. Depending on where you are from you might speak Spanish / Portuguese. With that I’d say aim for Spain or Portugal. Try to find a university, work or path of education you could do. There might be a network for trans people in Spain or Portugal who are willing to help with relocation. It could also be possible to apply for asylum due to the danger of your home country.
If Spanish isn’t an option most if not any European country will be able to help you out in English. UK is an obvious choice but atm they have their own problems around trans rights so I would at most use them as a temporary shelter before moving to a different EU country like Germany or Norway. Ireland is potentially also very good, as a stepping stone.
There is the trans network in the Netherlands they might have some resources for you.
UK […] a different EU country like Germany or Norway.
Only one of those three countries is in the EU, fyi. Not to knock your comment, it seems like very good advice.
Eh keep forgetting Norway ain’t EU and just shengan but it’s close enough 🫣 and to my credit for the UK I did say European 🤭
Please do not come to america, bb. 💜🙏🏻
ohhhhhh, i want know too, im in extreme faschist asshole, there a ton n ton bad things, biggest hell on the planet, i wanna peace so bad awawawaawa
I have no insight on anything to do with your specific circumstances but can provide a bit of insight into leaving a country in general.
Earlier this year my wife and I moved our family to the UK from the US. Our biggest hurdle was finding employment that offered sponsorship for a visa. My employer offered to sponsor for the max term of 5 years which we happily took as after 5 years you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain and stay without a visa. The next hurdle was paying for the visas. 5 years all at once was about $35k IIRC. Thankfully we had been talking about wanting to move for awhile now and saved for the effort. Restarting life also came with significant expenses as you’ll likely be living out of a suitcase while apartment whatnot gets everything resituated.
TLDR; find target countries, save a lot of money, find a job that’s sponsors, be patient and take each day as it comes.
This is a good question, in my opinion: What are the countries with the best trans rights protections and ease of access to immigration? I want to know so I have better answers when this comes up.
Canada, Thailand, Germany, Sweden, Norway
Denmark is fantastic as well, but hard to immigrate to.
Netherlands as well (but same as Denmark, hard to immigrate to).
If she is legally criminalized in her country, she may be able to apply for asylum/refugee status.
Yup
It would work in any normally functioning country that supports the geneva convention. So all of EU and probably australia, NZ, etc
I’ve been looking at Cuba a lot recently. Is it a bad or good place to move to for someone in your situation?
