My Mom keeps eight lamps in the living room and I hate walking around to toggle them all. My strategy is dimmable LED strips in strategic locations, all controlled by a single knob—it avoids the harsh single point source while maintaining its simplicity of operation.

I like the way some old houses do it where you have a single switch that controls multiple outlets which each have a lamp. Leave the lamps on and toggle the switch to turn them all on, or you can switch them one by one if needed. For my bedroom we have led strips all along the ceiling which are kept on the dimmest possible red setting at night, and can be switched to any colour or brightness by remote, plus a warm bulb lamp on either side of the bed within arms reach.
