I hope this person realizes this is just another metric that people are scared shitless, not some economic downturn because they didn’t hit the dollar spot at Target last week.

These universities should be offering shelter and refuge to every last possible student who could have been and still will be threatened by this administration. God knows they can fucking afford it. Our kids deserve to know their schools aren’t going to throw them under the bus at the first sign of trouble.

Quite literally, yes. But not everyone sees the 13 colonies as a good thing - and they have a point. Still, I think we can celebrate our shared ideals - as you said: federation, liberty, and justice for all. Not liberty for some, but libre for all. When I lived in a similar tourist town our line of thinking was, well surely they’ll have to finally provide housing once the cost of living within commuting distance of servants becomes impossible (ignorant, I know now). They cracked down on the unhoused a lot and really no space for them to go anyway.

Then I started to see old neighbors of mine in the parking lot of our apartment complex. One woman in particular, retirement age, former nurse. She was living inside her car, with no job, nothing. No family. Notably someone who wanted a job but just couldn’t get one. Some people in our complex would rotate taking her in, but without services in the area to help her it was just unsustainable. And management. Fucking landlords. They’d make us pay a fee for having her stay if they found out. This was ten years ago even.

I had to finally move my family out, I was fortunate enough to do so. But I’ll never forget her, and I’m sure she’s either in that car or on the streets now and it just breaks my fucking heart. I can’t stop fighting now when people like her are just trying to fucking survive.

It undoubtedly represents some horrific times in our history. But the beauty of it, imo, is that we can make it stand for anything we want. We do not have to let them define that for us, nor do we have to let the weight of the past make it unusable now. So yeah, I would very much like seeing people carry the flag, and the flag alone, alongside the protest signs.

MAGA has their own symbols now, conveniently leaving everything American without being accompanied by Trump on it bizarrely open for reclamation. One of the biggest opportunities I see for our moment is reclaiming American iconography, including the flag.

Taking “action” like this with mass anything is such a waste of what little time it would also take to just call your congressperson directly. At best with something like this you’re going to get tallied up but weighted so low it will hardly matter, especially when they’re sitting at…7k? Signatures right now. They will essentially spam filter you out. Please take direct, personal action.

I thought 50501 was more of a loose collective of groups coming together for this. That’s what was originally on their site. When that happens though it leads to a huge opening for existing groups with the infrastructure in place to kind of swoop in and take over.

If there is one group attempting to consolidate and claim this movement for themselves, I guarantee it will be Indivisible hijacking it for the Democratic Party. Tbh it was kind of ripe for this. Having so much on substack does seem to track with that assumption as well. I don’t know, I don’t like it.
