Hurt is the obvious answer, Trent Renzor basically officially handed that song to Johnny Cash.

I had no clue that was a cover, the Cash version is just so…natural.

And for a more personal pick, John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things.

I fall into the Trent Reznor camp on this. The Johnny Cash version is undoubtedly great, but a little… toothless(?)… compared to the original?

but a little… toothless(?)… compared to the original?

if you watch the music video it’s clearly meant to be the lamentation of a dying old man which is why it feels toothless

The Times They Are A-Changin’ covered by Flogging Molly

Original a Bob Dylan song and a bit boring tbh.

Tainted Love by Soft Cell and I also prefer the Midge Ure version of The Man Who Sold The World.

As for worst covers I propose Behind Blue Eyes by Limp Bizkit.

Nobody has ever agreed with me, but I think Sheryl Crow’s version of “Sweet Child o Mine” is much better - the original is too whiny, I hate his voice.

I will now accept your scorn.

Tbh I’ve never heard of that version so I’ll check it out. Admittedly, I like the high pitched wailing of the original, but art is subjective and there are very few wrong answers.

Nah you can have it, its a good version. The best thing about the g&r version is the bass, its the most well produced bass on like any recording ever. Other than that its bogged down with Axl and Slash just being massive cliches, parodies of their own success.

everyone’s favorite blues & country song they probably are enjoying a ‘cover’ but idk if that term really applies when no-one knows or listens to the original shrug-outta-hecks

even when it’s known like you’re not really gonna tell me the Kinks & Kokomo Arnold are doing the same song with ‘Milkcow Blues’, folks will change basically everything about a blues song and claim it’s the same real theseus ass shit

Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah is better than the original Leonard Cohen version IMO, but both are good.

edit: Speaking of Jeff Buckley, also his cover of Mama You Been On My Mind (Bob Dylan).

I Fought the Law by The Clash

All their covers are great: Jail Guitar Doors, Police and Thieves, Pressure Drop – But I Fought the Law is like the best rock cover ever, or at least very close to the top
