I run without a desktop environment on my laptop. A single-app kiosk provider (used to use kmscon but it was too glitchy) runs kitty which immediately loads tmux. My nvim is bespoke, and mighty. I’m working on a suite of little terminal tools to prevent me from ever needing a web browser again, which is good because none of the text-based ones work anymore. All my mouse is good for is waking up my screen. I make system changes by letting Chinese LLMs operate on a copy of my nixos configs.

sometimes people forget the most important part of the linux philosophy. privacy and security are just side effects.
no matter how weird you make it, systemd is still willingly goinging along with the upcoming age verification laws that epstein class wants to use to prevent us from learn about the palestinian genocide (and future atrocities) and the kernel is captured by the american gov’t to protect our nvidia based technological lead.

at a minimum, avoid systemd and only use any of these kernels: WLIB-Kernel, Linux-libre, Managarm & Asterinas
doing this skirts the epstein classe’s efforts at capturing linux, but who knows for how long.
I’ve been loving Qutebroswer. Gives me all the browser-stuff that I need, with vim keybindings. It’s also super customizeable.

Hell yeah, I checked their codebase and immediately saw a cast usage. That’s one of those python things that no one uses but it absolutely amazing if you actually use the type system properly.
I love properly typed Python code. It hits different.
It does seem like they’re casting a ForwardRef onto None though, so not sure exactly what they’re trying to accomplish there. It does literally nothing at all at runtime or lint time, but it’s still cool so see a cast in the wild.
i use windows 11 with an ubuntu VM running on hyper-v like a true corporate psychopath
i used to do this on my work laptop and discovered the hard way how much hyperv likes to fuck with a vm.

If I had more than 1 GPU, I seriously looked into running something like Proxmox on my desktop and doing everything through VMs in the hypervisor. I’m sure it would lead to all sorts of annoying problems but it sounds like fun anyway.

I’d use FreeBSD, but it doesn’t seem to have support for my laptop’s keyboard, and it’s not great for gaming. But if I want gaming, then I’m clearly not on the “free software” bandwagon, so BSD is kinda pointless. But I do like niche OSes.

I ran my PC’s and home-lab on FreeBSD for a while. It was great, I loved the simplicity of it all.
But I needed to run RPIs and K8s, so I had to abandon it.
If I didn’t need to learn stuff for work, I’d probably still be on a *BSD
I used to use OpenBSD on my main machine. It was pretty great.
Fantastic when used with OPNSense as a router os too.
I use OpenBSD on a couple of my laptops I do light browsing and some basic programming on, one of the best experiences ever. I like to play games on my main machine though so I stick with Linux there, but maybe one day I’ll stop being a evil g*mer or just exclusively play old Quake games and can ditch Linux
Half of me will enjoy when Linux is also the #1 desktop/laptop OS (/kernel) and all the mainstream games and apps and stuff will be built for it first and foremost
The other half will be sad and genuinely want to move to OpenBSD when all the companies and government agencies (and we’ve seen the wedge’s thin end for a while now) are happily enshittifying and locking down Linux by all possible means.
The laser T-Rex will be a good comfort when that gets too bad.
I’m not sure that holds. The major difference between Linux and BSD is the license: Linux is copyleft, BSD is permissive. FreeBSD actually just completed their decades-long goal to remove all GPL code last month, even, and is now proudly socialism-free. You can now embed all of FreeBSD in your commercial product and modify it at will with no obligations to anyone.
I mean, I don’t really hate it, but it’s hard to see BSD as a safe harbor from corporate meddling in Linux. The Linux situation feels like it’s rather the other way around; corpos who extend Linux are legally bound to make their changes public to be accepted or rejected by the broader Linux community, while Apple has no obligation whatsoever to share any MacOS code with any other BSD distribution.

Sure, you’re factually correct. But I don’t believe licenses are the issue, just where corporations and governments are focusing their deadly ruin-stuff laser vision. I think you (and most the FOSS community) vastly overestimate how effective the legal protection is. You’re expecting companies to play by the rules THIS TIME. Once ‘big tech’ decides GPL isn’t fair, it won’t matter.
Companies like Microsoft are getting on board with Linux. Even if they can’t get away with ignoring the copyleft license entirely (which I suspect they soon will), they could definitely afford to make a legal clean-room copy of any code they want to make proprietary. Soon that proprietary code will become a necessity to do X, and bam, using any functional Linux will be back in the same boat as using Windows.
Best to go back to BeOS.

Void is still GPL so if you are trying to be as “open” as possible you gotta use a BSD distro (though it wasn’t until earlier this year that BSD was fully GPL free)
