People on lemmy are the same fuckwad assholes you meet on reddit. It’s not like being a better person is enforced on the lemmyverse outside of a couple of instances like hexbear and lemmygrad. idk maybe it’s me but it’s like why bother, why not just use reddit if you’re going to be a shitty person or overall debate pervert? Weird shit.

well alot of the appeal of sites like this is the decentralized nature which is popular among privacy/open source nerds. You know the linux user types. lemmy is supposed to just be open-source decentralized reddit derivative. Rather or not it’s pointless really depends on the instance (privacy/closed source concerns not withstanding). There’s also the flipside where ther’es people who are too fascist for reddit to stomach them. Historically though those people have mostly made thier own websites, like r/femaledatingadvice (though they weren’t techincally banned i think they left out of fear being banned though) and r/incel or just died/got absorbed into less extremist out. When you have a site who’s main purpose is to be a place for people who are dissatisifed with reddit for various reasons. It tends to be similiar to reddit. lemmygrad/hexbear isn’t evne that dissimiliar to socialist subreddits. Though with deprogram has done heavy damage to that ecosystem. I’m not sure what you are expecting it’s like expecting revolt userbase to be radically different from discord userbase. At the end of the day it’s an open source decentralized version of reddit it’s not going to be radically differetn from reddit.

The funny thing about “the Linux user types” is that I actually only got into Linux because of other commies who use it and swear by it. Actually got distro recommendations on a commie website when I was first looking into it. I guess Open Source really does attract all kinds. From fascist nutjobs thrown off of even places like Twitter, to the types of communists who are like “Proprietary software is an infosec nightmare and I refuse to use it for political reasons. Also, I don’t want to give one red cent, or any personal data, to American corporations.” I’m not that nuts. But modern day Linux really isn’t the pain it used to be, I like my chosen DE a lot more than I’ve ever liked any Windows UI, and simply not using a proprietary OS made by a US company is a good opsec decision that doesn’t really cost me any extra spoons, time, money, or effort. Do I obsess over personal security and think I actually matter to foreign feds? No way. But if a safety precaution costs me nothing or is an excuse for something I wanted to do anyway, I might as well take that precaution.

I feel like one of the few cons of fediverse equivs to enshittified old sites is that they’re naturally going to primarily attract tech nerds who know how to run instances and etc, who usually are either abt 40 yrs old and largely disconnected from the backgrounds, cultural interests and reference pools, and sense of online comedy of the would-be-Reddit-ditchers half their age (not that it’s bad to be a 40yo who’s seen every beavis and butthead ep but only like five smiling friends screencaps, just that it feels I’d be babbling abt a dream I had immediately after waking up if I brought up any media made by someone born after 1992), or under 40 yrs old but only interested in posting on lemmy/mastodon abt tech nerd stuff (which is also fine! It just gets kinda boring when that’s the ONLY thing I see ppl post abt)

Regarding the Hexbeargrad sphere specifically it always trips me up when I’m not sorting by local and memes that feel like they’re frozen 2018 show up completely unthawed (although that’s less a 40yo techie issue and more one with Reddit fundamentalists having memories of Digg’s collapse), and though this place is obviously far more dynamic than lemworld and its brethren I still feel kinda left behind by some undefinable residual 2010sness in the air despite our relative advances (which I could’ve attributed to our discontinuity from the alternate path the sub would’ve taken if it dodged the banhammer if it wasn’t for the fact that we’re still at 1:1 parity with the commie subs still on reddit, so I might just be feeling an issue with reddit+its descendants as a whole idk)

Do note that the fact that we spent 1-2 years shitposting back and forth like a particle accelerator until we federated and got to unleash ourselves means that we were gonna be a few years ahead anyway against the other, more casual, 99.8% of the fediverse, bc normal ppl (unlike us) don’t have shitposting arms races against one another for fun every day (though we’ve kinda slowed down with that imo, step up ur gamessss)
