I feel like grinding levels. Looking for something NOT turn based, kind of hack and slash-y. For instance, I just tried out Valkyrie Profile 2, and found the combat kind of clunky with the whole party being controlled at once and limited by AP and weapon attack caps.

Im struggling to find more ways to describe what im looking for, so drop what you think fits and ill look it up and check some gameplay!

Brave Fencer Musashi - PSX - SquareSoft.

This is a very fun one from the late 90s. Awesome music, some of that awesome Square medieval fantasy style, night/day cycle (fatige system, higher difficult monsters at night, change of npc behaviour), platforms, minigames, etc.

Spent nights playing this one with my childhood friends.

I hope is the style you are looking for.

  • Literally anything from the Tales of series of JRPGs (very few exceptions, can only think of 1 that actually sucked back on the PS2)

Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia are pretty good starting points but almost none of the games are part of the same continuity so it doesn’t really matter

Also all them can be played co-op (aside from the new one but there’s a mod for the PC version that enables co-op)

Love the Tales Series. So um akshually tales of phantasia, symphonia and that bad sequel on the wii are all the same universe. Is there a way to play symphonia with online co-op? Maybe with Dolphin? Cause back when it csme out I was 12 and had 3 friends to play the game full co-op with. We swapped around who controlled on the overworld every half hour but for battles we each had our 2 characters that we drew from a hat. This led to an interesting thing where certain characters could never be in battle at the same time, the guy who got Lloyd also got Raine for example, so either the best damage dealer OR the healer could be on field cause no one else could use those 2. It made for some very interesting moments. We had all beaten it once and had a few new game + bonuses on, but it made it more interesting strategy wise

Thirding I guess. When it cane out it totally dominated my summer between 6th and 7th grade. It’s even fun to play more than once cause you get sorta Style Points called Grade that dont do anything for the first playthrough and instead are used to buy your new game + features. Some of which make the game harder in specific ways as well so its kind of a custom hard mode too. I would look up how character building works cause it’s a bit weird, it can be a bit of a guide game for that stuff and also making sure you don’t lock yourself out of side quests by advancing the main story at the wrong time

Phantasy Star online? You can play it online on private servers these days. Or you can emulate an old version (Dreamcast, GameCube or Xbox versions) and just play it solo.

It’s pretty grindy though when you play alone. But it certainly has an old school hack n slash to it.

    bad joke

    (can be on switch, too)

    what??? there’s a switch 2 emulator already???

Idk if you have played Hades or the recently released Hades 2 yet but they are hack and slashy with tons of things to upgrade.

They are technically roguelites but they have lots of upgrades to grind for and excellent combat and have excellent switch versions if you have a modded switch

The Xenoblade Chronicles franchise. XC2 in particular is amazing, fantastic soundtrack, combat fits your requirements.

Ys 8 Lacrimosa of Dana is also a solid one for the switch that could scratch the itch you mention.

Btw, the term you seem to be looking for is action jrpg.
