So really everyone should be sanctioning Russia, for their own good.

That does assume that the universe would be simulated for our benefit and that intelligent life is not just a side effect. If that was the case then why even bother including hundreds of billions of galaxies worth of stars in the simulation.

Everyone has known about this for a quarter century and has expected that this would be the first lever China would pull in the event of war. Either one of those should leave evidence in an autopsy and in a bottle at the scene. Putin doesnt normally kill people like that though, at least when its a revenge killing. He wants everyone to know that he did it, that there is nothing anyone can do about it, and that anyone could be next if they cross him.
