1·5 months agoHow much is the university entrance stuff “real” vs cultural high demand on kids/students? Like can people generally get into a college and get a good education but it just isn’t the super “prestigious” schools?

[3:48 PM] They have an assortment of their own native (stolen from western ones of course) versions of said platforms if I’m not mistaken. Certainly would be easier to influence westerners if they got on said platforms. Like Cal pointed out, Tiktok as we see it isn’t what it is in China.

Suffice it to say if you knew about the shit you did they would be a much bigger threat than Elon.

Biden said he had no intentions on enforcing the tik tok ban during the last days of his presidency and left it to Trump to enforce. As soon as Biden said he was not going to ban it China released their statement Via tik tok that they were shutting down because it was being banned. Then the day after suddenly the new President who created a crypto coin that China invested in to the tune of Billions, said he was going to save Tik Tok and then Tik tok puts out an announcement praising the purchased president.

15·7 months agoMost American politics is just theater(at the electoral level). Trump not really having any hard alliances, working with Meta, and seeing that the ban wasn’t super popular it was probably easy to unban hoping he can get them to sell, but even if they don’t he still comes out on top. All the millionaire geriatrics in the house, congress, Biden, and supreme court just thought “China bad” would be good enough to either kick them out or get them to sell. Most of the time that would work, but younger people are not on the same program (yet).
I don’t really think it is some GOP conspiracy or long con by Trump, all this just seems like taking very obvious opportunities and capital just moving along.
Given the “reasons” TikTok was banned them censoring and adjusting the algorithms for anything relating to american politics is pretty expected.
Is TikTok and US AI tech really seen as real leverage? They seem more like distractions and spectacle. Tarrif’s, sanctions, the fed etc I could see making significant compromises but I don’t really know enough about the situation and what their analysis of how much the economy would be helped etc.
I thought Meta was out of China because they didn’t want to follow Chinese law so got kicked out, would they really change the laws for Meta? (Maybe Meta has changed its mind and would rather be in China than not)
and the supreme court unanimously upheld the law. This was completely bipartisan with overwelming support from both sides(for politicians, normal people are more split on the issue)

One video on xhs (giving an overview for the new audience) said that the algorithm isn’t centered around the “rich get richer” effect and tries to give a much more even distribution, which I imagine dilutes all the “dopamine assault” content developed to game tik-tok (profit motive) type algorithms (and other addictive qualities) plus probably makes it more useful as a search engine.
You should have a way to screen shot, and at least on my android it has a translate option open up (mine is vol down and power at the same time)
After “big” events (at least as american reporting) I like to see what chinese commenters think about them, I might have to get the app just for that. I remember like a day or 2 after “the Adjuster” there were some comments confused about why Brian Thompson/CEO was killed and shouldn’t the killer be going after shareholders which I thought was funny but also has its own insight from being further from the situation (pretty sure Brian was a big shareholder anyways)
This reminds me of the famous “paper tiger” Strong-Mao interview I recently read(short read btw, like a page or two and honestly lots of parallels to the current Palestine/Israel+USA can be made).
If the “paper tiger” concept is useful and general, which I am not sure it is tbh, certainly dangling the threat of removing/lessening trans rights (of imperial core people) at the expense of many thousands of Palestinians lives is a type of “paper tiger” pointed inward(Mao’s case seems way more dire, one of the poorest most exploited countries in a war with US supporting one side and the fear of nuclear weapons is in the air… huh sounds a little like Palestine/Israel). Trans rights are not given by a couple of politicians, they are decided and fought for by the people as pretty much all rights have. People should be a little more brave, and not be put into a box of “we got to vote blue or else our rights” and maybe that isn’t the way to get trans rights and maybe we can get both trans rights and not genocide Palestinians at the same time…
Keep on being normal platonic friends and doing normal platonic friends things until they get the hint(make sure you are as ambiguous as possible, want to make them very awkward and question everything. If you want to accelerate things, at the coffee meet up you should complain about not being able to find anyone, “I just want to meet someone like [descriptions of friend]” then move to a different country in embarrassment and 10 years later message them about going on a second date.
If you are insecure I guess you could instead say “I meant for coffee to be a date, sorry if I wasn’t clear, would you like to go on a date?” and skip all the blissful nights of keep yourself up wondering what they think of you.
A thought experiment (which isn’t perfect) is to ask yourself “how would I act if this was done to me”, would you be in some awkward limbo if a platonic friend invited you to coffee or would you even think nothing of it or would you jump to this is probably romantic I should make me knowing it is explicit off just being invited to coffee by an established friend and not “be oblivious”? What would it take for you to be like “this is romantic, here is my chance to respond (in interest or disinterest) and this is how I respond…”?
