I believe that one is a Russula brevipes. Fun fact about them, if an ascomycete fungus comes into contact with them it parasitizes the Russula and turns it into an choice edible lobster mushroom like this.

If you look for the post prior to mine of the Russula brevipes mushroom, that’s how big this was as that was likely the host species that was parasitized. It was about the size of my hand.

The last few years I’ve had a ton of luck finding them on the side of trails. Last year was miraculous. No joke for about a half mile there was at least a hundred as large as this one.

A little late for this call if you ask me. Auto loan delinquency rates are currently at 5.1% and only predicted to get worse. Vehicle prices are way inflated, some say by up to 20%. Even since I saw a picture of Sarcodes sanguinea it has been on my bucket list of plants to find in the wild. It’s a beautiful plant. Unfortunately they really only show up on the upper West coast and I’m not near there.
