I believe most vegans like animals. Yeah, yeah, carnists, we know your “with ketchup” shit, forget you!
Now what I wanted to struggle you people with…why the fuck do some vegans have pets? Animal stores are a fuck, 100 gorillion dead animals, but unironically! The so called conformation of animals, and the forced breeding, that’s just dystopian! And you can adopt, not shop, but most do not! And outdoor cats, that’s a catastrophe, especially with vegans! (Sorry for the levity, I know it’s serious, but it is the Hexbear injoke)
They make money selling living beings, why would a vegan pay them!?
Sorry for the rant. Vegan btw, I think all animal industries should be shut down, including animal shops! Maybe assistance animals can be an exception, if they can be trained ethically!
What do you think?
Might be a difference between libs and rads again. Lib vegans who do it for vibes won’t see a problem with getting Snookles from a breeder because it’s the perfect mix of Japanese-French Bull Russell Madagascar Terrier (I don’t know dogs). And if you tell them their “perfect little angel” that barks at every black and brown person will die at age seven to heart or liver failure, they will talk shit about you to the HOA or the PTA or whatever.
Rad vegans, depending on how involved/knowledgeable they are about certain issues might make errors, but imo when you bring up these points, they will change their mind and make adjustments. And a lot of them already have in many other ways. That’s why, on this issue, most rad people in general, even non-vegans, always want to get pets from shelters instead.
So, yeah. It’s a problem because people have divorced veganism from other struggles (and associated it with California quackery like crystals and shit).
Idk if someone counts as “vegan” if its for “vibes”. What does that even mean lmao.
Are vegans buying pets from breeders and puppy mills? I have zero facts or analyses on this, but it seems that rescue adoptions is the dominant sentiment even among everyday liberals.
Me neither, I have to admit. I certainly hope you are right about them liberals!
I think it’s usually adopted or if it was from a pet store it was from BEFORE they were vegan which i cant really fault them for…
And you can adopt, not shop, but most do not!
Whether or not that’s true (I’m skeptical - almost everyone I know who gets a dog or cat gets one from a shelter), it seems like this is the solution to the whole ethical quandry. It’s very easy to get an animal without engaging at all with the pet breeding industry. I have two cats that I found abandoned as kittens and they are fully indoor. I don’t see any issue with veganism there.
Vegans, probably, do tend to adopt? Then again, I totally forgot, but at least cat owners have to buy non-vegan products to feed their pets, no?
Most vegans I know, including myself, exclusively adopt. Cats are touchy issue and are often in the “don’t ask, don’t tell” camp because a lot of vegans had cats before they went vegan in the first place and there’s no good solution to their problem other than killing their pet (morally wrong), giving them away (shifting the blame), releasing it to the wild (a death sentence to them or other animals), or buying vegan food (which exists, but as cats get older they often need special formulated diets to avoid painful things like bladder crystals and urinary issues).
I recommend this clip from Gary Francione on the topic. https://www.abolitionistapproach.com/follow-up-to-pets-commentary-non-vegan-cats/
Is it not more morally wrong to kill hundreds of animals to feed your cat?
Sure, but this is exactly what I mean about it being complicated. I wouldn’t trust someone who did this kind of calculus and decided to kill their pet cat they’ve had for 8 years. It definitely means that someone shouldn’t get any new cats. But you’re also going down a road that requires all shelters in the world to just mass exterminate all their cats. I understand the numbers argument, but I think these lines of thought lack empathy in their own way and aren’t helpful, since obviously nobody is going to kill their pet in the way I mentioned. Ideally, more funding and effort goes toward creating viable food alternatives and testing their efficacy over the long term, especially when it comes to animals with chronic health conditions.
“But then again, this just shows how clearly, it shows clearly, how problematic the institution of pet ownership is.”
cat owners have to buy non-vegan products to feed their pets, no?
Yeah, it’s true - meat comes into my house to feed my cats. Not sure how to resolve that. I’d be curious about people’s thoughts on this.
