      Anti-immigration? No. Right wing parties don’t want less immigrants, they want immigrants to be disposable labour. They want corporations to be able to easily dispose of workers who organise.

    The minimum information about the BSW while it would be the most relevant. After being treated badly by all other parties, e.g. no recount in the federal election to verify their narrow 5% miss, the other parties rely on them to form a government. Do they support it or will there be new elections?

    Also no word about the narrowness of a potential disaster. Without the 5% for the BSW, the AfD was only lacking one seat for a majority. There was the risk of one CDU member changing sides to make an AfD government possible.

    I know this is a bit of a spicy take and I hope it doesn’t age like milk, but this may not be the worst thing for Germany long-term. Far-right populist parties often do a bad job once they get into power. If they screw up running Saxony-Anhalt over the next three years it may put voters off voting for them in the next federal election.

      Orban governed for, what? 16 years? PiS in Poland won the last presidential elections and is on track to be back in power in couple of years. Modi has 70% approval rating. Meloni is still leading in polls. Milei won midterms a year ago. So… not sure if what you’re describing really happens that often.

      Proportional system usually results in coalition government so the radicals are forced to mellow out. Keeping AfD out of coalition by firewall might do much more harm than good in the long run. This kind of result emboldens them to stay extremist.

        History and research shows the opposite to be true. Coalition, talking, taking over their topics, anything legitimizing strengthens them. The only effective counter is a broad rejection across politics, society, including companies, religious institutions etc, and press.

      It literally explained all of that in the article.

      I don’t understand what sucked about the website, found it perfectly usable myself. I did reject all cookies when it asked though, so maybe that helped.

      the fascists likely didn’t get a super majority, but might be in that state’s government as major coalition partner anyway.

      long term: political disorder within germany’s inter-state federal politics, possible political firewall (“Brandmauer”) against an entire federal state, possible conflict with NATO over logistics, Germany “being busy with itself” etc…

          Actually it’s stage 3/4 of 5.

          1. Fringe: just a couple people meeting in a bar
          2. Normalization: go out and do protests, interviews, etc. People hate your ideas still, but you just keep saying them until they’re normal.
          3. Mainstream: established parties get scared, start talking the radical positions to get voters back, thereby proving that the positions are actually fine! So why vote for the cheap copy then, if you can have the original?
          4. Power: win elections, start dismantling some Democratic institutions.
          5. Gleichschaltung: take over total power via manufactured coup etc. Then dismantle anything that’s left.
