    Regulatory capture now that they own what is essentially the spot for local offline models.

    They’re going to claim these models are dangerous, only used for revenge/deep fake porn, are used to attack public infustructure, etc.

    Then only they will be able to afford a platform that hosts local models because the rules make it impossible for anyone else to host these models.

    We won’t ever stop the models from being able to do dangerous stuff, or put limitations companies like open ai, or hold grok/elon accountable for generating csam. But we will pull out every step from you accessing alternatives.

      I hate this garbage as a whole, but local offline models are the lesser of two evils for sure (there are still massive ethical issues with how they’re “trained” in the first place and the detrimental effects of using any of this junk but that’s another conversation). It’s pretty obvious that nvidia’s just trying to kill off this entire option and force people onto subscriptions or through their own services littered with invasive tracking and whatever the fuck.

        All the big models are trained on vast datasets that include copyrighted material and so on.

        But localized finetunes almost all are trained on curated data from other models. IE, you plug in a fancy prompt into another, smarter model to generate a ton of content you then use to train the LORA for the smaller model. Then you merge that LORA into the smaller model. In a way, they are stealing from thieves to get their finetunes, in addition to abliteration (decensoring).

      That just means the models will be on torrent trackers, the infrastructure is already there.

        Thats just splitting everything into two different Internet’s and we are already kind of moving there. I didnt think I would be a fediverse guy, or that android could still be locked down despite the base of android being open sourced. Yet here I am and google is trying 7 different ways to block third party apps from being installed and Roms like graphene from working for their captchas. Like I wouldnt of thought nvidia would be buying essentially the biggest repo of open source models, because it would threaten their investments with openai etc.

        Its becoming illegal to use torrents in certain countries, its going to get harder and harder to access what used to be “the normal internet”. My fear then is that over time less and less people contribute or participate in these places like lemme to the point we kind of just die off a slow death.

        It sounds alarmist sure but it feels like more and more every day the internet is getting locked out because ai needs all the data from the websites, and they cant have anyone else using their APIs. More and more you have to be logged in to use anything, and the amount of stuff you have to do to work around that is climbing.
