Your suspicion is wrong. It’s one of those things that you have to admit is pretty impressive about Disney World from an engineering perspective, even if you hate Disney from a business perspective.

The largest system of utilidors is beneath Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, but they are not a basement, contrary to popular belief. Because of an elevated water table, most of these tunnels were actually built at ground level, and the Magic Kingdom was built above that.
All that says is that Disney moved the ground up so that they could have underground stuff without it getting flooded. Or is the entire park the roof of a one story building?
The distinction between “the tunnels are underground” and “the tunnels are above ground, it’s just that the stuff visitors walk on is then above that” seems like a pretty subtle one.

I read somewhere that yes, there is indeed a dungeon, a network of dungeons actually. The park is essentially on the second level, the first level is the underground network actors use to move around the park discreetly.
I’ve heard that too. I’ve also heard about the sophisticated trash system that’s allegedly there. but if you look at an aerial photo of the place, it’s pretty clear that almost all of the attractions are accessible from the outside edges of the park, so I suspect that the tunnels are limited if they exist at all.

They’re not top secret, but you’ve guessed right all along.
It’s more of a mixture of tunnels, backstage corridors between attractions, and open areas within internal attraction-voids.
As in, there really are tunnels, but no one with any knowledge on the subject never claimed the whole thing was tunnels.
EDIT: Actually, you’re both right in parts because in large portions also have the whole elevated by one level thing, and the “outside” is really the second story. I skimmed that critical part on the first look at the wiki.
