Band-aid that props up an intolerable abuse.
A computer doesn’t need to know shit about its user. You are an object, do as you’re told.
I agree.
I have written it before and repeat it here: I think if the courts in the US are doing their jobs, this entire law should be struck down as a First Amendment violation. Distributing operating systems is free speech and can’t be made subject to the condition that they implement any particular features.
The government can engage in product regulation, that is a fairly normal thing for governments to do; but then it should be limited to operating systems actually preinstalled on devices.

Even that is missing the point. There is no legitimate government interest in a computer knowing who is using it. You don’t get to demand personally identifying information just to boot.
I’ll call it a win
Not good enough. The violation still exists in many shapes and forms.
This is a pathetic attempt to appease the legitimate concerns and is only going to last for a short while before they “close the loophole”.
Today’s compromise is tomorrow’s loophole.
