The one time it actually is the ancient buddhist symbol

Ah well, another 5 billion to Ukraine
There’s a rampant use of symbols associated with Nazism in Europe, nobody is doing anything to stop them, nobody is stepping in to stop Israel, nobody spoke about Iran. But they will take direct action to deface buddha apparently.
Europe’s cooked.
germans think non-nazi swastikas are bigger problems than 88% of their population voting for populists and 102% of the population wanting to preemtively invade russa
Krauts were contorting themselves trying to claim that symbols callled shit like the Judentoten Rune or whatever were just peaceful hindu symbols when they’re worn by Ukrainian soldiers but they’ll go ahead to break into some guys house and deface a Buddhist statue
It’s sure dumb, but imagine some idiot knowing about German history but not about Buddhism. I’d take such an idiot vandalize the Buddha accidentally over any idiot thinking “Nice swastika bro”.

I dunno, betting on westerners being ignorant of other cultures has yet to steer me wrong
The blue checkmark is definitely something to ponder though
Just fyi the OP is vietnamese https://www.reddit.com/r/notinteresting/comments/1vgzhws/comment/p22s587

They were this close to breaking the wheel of Samsara as well. Better luck next time.
Unfortunately they incurred alot of bad karma that they will need to burn off by being reincarnated as a german again
What’s the exchange rate between buddhist karma and Reddit karma these days?
Germans will believe a Wolfsangel actually stands for the N and I in ‘Nirvana Iloveeveryone’ before accepting that the swastika is also widely used in Asia
I mean if it’s on a statue of the Buddha I feel it’s meaning on context is kinda implicitly non-fascist
Yes, but technically, buddhist can be fascists. Or slavers like the Dalai Lama.
The CIA backed Falun Gong also use a swastika in their logo (actually, five swastikas)
That’s true but in the way it seemed to be used on the statue wouldn’t leave me to believe is represented fascism.
Or the ones in Sri Lanka, check out ArunAnnow’s Grief-Stricken Winds videos on YouTube

You can’t wear that here cuh
might be a hot take but there shouldnt be any “ethical swastikas” in the west and especially not fucking Germany
Admittedly I don’t know how important that symbol is to Buddhism/Hinduism, but I think I’d be pretty upset if they banned my religious symbols because of fash crackers that I had nothing to do with
Well, you could always ask the Palestinians what they think of the blue star of David
. The star of David is an important religious symbol under which a genocide has been and currently is being done. Are Buddhists doing a genocide in Germany?
Nope, but the europeans sure did one under that symbol in both configurations
Why should they erase part of their own culture because europeans systematically massacred people under a symbol that has the same shape. They did it under every shape you can think of.
never did say anything about them erasing their culture, but when you’re in the west where it’s primarily recognized as a hate symbol you could exercise critical thinking.
It’s sure dumb, but imagine some idiot knowing about German history but not about Buddhism. I’d take such an idiot vandalize the Buddha accidentally over any idiot thinking “Nice swastika bro”.
”ethical swastika” ? the swastika predates nazi use by thousands of years
i’m fully aware yes, and it’s use in europe was ruined by the fact that the nazis did a genocide under it.
Why should buddhists and hindus have to comform to western norms because some white guy decided to steal our symbol 80 years ago
Like obviously theres room for abuse like some neonazi claiming that hes a buddhist or whatever
But in this context its obvious that the symbol is not being used in a hateful manner
Just a remark to your first semtence: Anyone living anywhere should at least somewhat conform to local norms and should be aware of them. I should not order pork chops in an Iranian restaurant, smoke weed in Singapore or use symbols which are locally considered inadequate.
Racists love hiding behind norms, why should we turn off our brains because of a norm?
- don’t worry about the separate water fountains, it’s normal
- don’t worry about forcing people to remove religious headwear, it’s our heckin norm to hate Muslims or be indifferent to their needs
Not saying anyone should turn off their brains, but being aware of local norms helps. A swastika in Germany simply does have another meaning as in SEA. As does smoking weed or eating porkchops.
Every culture loves “hiding” behind norms. That does not necessarily make them better or worse. Norms are not a racist attribute. Being subservient to the rule of law and thus “rightful” is more significant and the source of “right” in contrast to left. Both have little to do with actual directions.
just a remark to your post: who cares what germans “locally consider inadequate”
also smoking weed in singapore probably rocks. imagine having a chao kwaytiao in a sweaty hawker center… ON WEED :jon-stewart-blazed:
because a white guy stole the symbol and neo nazis love to hide their shit everywhere

Yes but hows that my problem and its not like nazis dont have other symbols that they can freely use other than the swastika
and that’s why i said it’s a hot take. i dont trust anyone in the west with a swastika, what can i say?
“Any westerner” instead of the “anyone in the west” i guess
sure. i’m just not going to do a case-by-case analysis of a person who has a swastika if they wish for good fortune or if they’re a neonazi. i will just steer clear as a self-preservation.
Growing up one of my best friend’s parents had some wall hangings that included “swastikas” that were very obviously not Nazi. I think it’s pretty damn easy to discern which is which:

The later was obviously derived from the former but is a wholly different thing.
Furthermore, in the original english translation of mein kampf, the tanslator (a catholic priest) deliberately translated “Hakenkreuz” as “Swastika”. There have been forms of such angular spiral icons going back thousands of years.
Here is a rug from a Roman villa in what is now spain from the 1st-4th century:

This is actually closer to the Nazi symbol in orientation than the actual Buddhist or Hindu versions.
Now I feel like I need to be clear, this is by no means an argument to “reclaim” anything especially not when white people try to pull that argument. Just context for OP’s point.
