      There’s surprising regional variation in Italian Subs because they were an invention of various grocers and deli owners in New England trying to sell sandwiches to mostly Italian dockworkers. The infamous Maine Italian has no ingredients associated with Italian cuisine and is made on a hot dog bun.

      The Italian Beef is a Chicago original created by adding giardiniera to a French Dip sandwich.
