All the valve related subreddits are so funny right now. So much billionaire defending going on.
I got a used Steam Deck last year when they were still cheap and it’s great, although with the way gaming is going that might be the last console I buy. Anyway I don’t even hate the Steam Deck but Valve glazers are even more insufferable than Nintendo glazers and defending a $300 price increase as “😢 sowwy they had no choice” while Gaben has is yachts is wild.
The future of gaming looks bleak. Thanks capitalism. I have a bad feeling console gaming is basically going to be killed by overpriced games and hardware and people having no money. Looking forward to a future where all games are a gatcha or season pass thing, only available iOS with terrible clunky touchscreen only controls because soon phones will be the only electronics people can afford to have.

Playing Mina the Hollower obsessively right now so I can’t fully agree. Really good games are made with little to no specs needed. There is a rich underground that will only thrive more as powerful gear becomes inaccessible.
However I agree that the era of ambitious projects with enough leeway to remain creative is over and that’s sad because this is how we had Half Life, classic Zelda games, Fromsoft games… and that’s a loss for sure
I felt buyer’s remorse when I bought a Legion Go back in Dec. I thought $700 was way too much for it. Looked at the price now and it’s like $1200!??
Guess I better buy a mini pc to turn into an emulation station before the price of those skyrocket too
Can’t you just connect a display to the legion go?

I have a secondhand Intel NUC with Batocera (similar to Retropie, but for PC architecture) installed on it. The NUC has an older CPU so the best it can play is up to PSX/N64/Dreamcast era, but since I don’t play too many newer systems than that it fits my use case perfectly. I’m all about 8 and 16 bit games anyway.
FOMO & price hikes are really creating some kind of consumerist whirlpool of spending and ideology.
I will defend my puter with my life. I will die before it does if I can help it

This is my steam deck. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My steam deck is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
Without me, my steam deck is useless. Without my steam deck, I am useless.
This is my steam deck, this is my gun!
It’s especially ridiculous because the Steam Deck hardware is getting old at this point. Honestly, for that price get a Macbook Air instead, they’re not that bad for gaming and have much better battery life.
Building a new PC at the end of 2025 is looking like one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
The only issue with the MacBook is compatibility. A lot of games do not have a Mac build available.
And reparability
It’s also not a handheld gaming device.
Using compatibility layers to run Windows games works reasonably well.
Genuine question; What compatibility layers exist for modern MacOS systems to run games? To my understanding, it’s fairly difficult to translate x86 instructions into ARM.
Sine is what’s mainly used, although Apple released something called the Game Porting Toolkit that helps with running games. Crossover is a popular piece of software that can run Windows apps including games, but it costs a shitload of money. Sikarugir is a free open source alternative that works pretty well (relatively speaking), but setup is much more a pain in the ass.
There’s a Mac version of an app called GameHub in beta form, it’s already out on Android phones and can be used to play PC games with impressive results. There are videos of it running on various Macs including the Neo, and it looks promising.
I sold mine last year on eBay due to needing money for bills. I am in a much better spot financially and just picked one up again to replace it (from eBay for less than I sold my old one). I figured now was better than when the secondhand market finally self-corrected and used ones were going for the same price or more than MSRP.
But gods did Valve beyond over correct on that price. Though I wonder if it’s as much of an overcorrection as people think. When it boils down to it, when it cones to hardware manufacturers, Valve is probably fairly low down the list of importance with RAM producers. They’re probably not getting this RAM for a good price. Also, they’ve probably been funneling their limited capacity into the likely DOA, ill-fated Steam Machines.
