• hah, a tiny town in my state got in the local news yesterday for voting to enact a 5 year moratorium on allowing the construction of any datacenters. the article made sure to point out that none had even been proposed at this point.

    when i read it, i thought “respect”

    Huh… this is the first I’m hearing of this data center being built, and I live within 25 miles of it. Sure explains Amazon’s sudden expansion in the surrounding area over the past year, and also explains why a couple of the major ‘small towns’ here have been trying to aggressively gentrify over the past couple years.

    The community was previously left stranded by a major multinational when in 2009 the closure of a DHL Express facility eliminated more than 8,000 jobs, devastating the local economy.

    That’s like not even close to what happened, but okay. I mean, it’s a very simplified version, but lord there’s a lot missing to paint the picture.
