html is okay
css is fucking stupid garbage with no consistency though
HTML kind of sucks, but for understandable reasons IMO (old standard updated many times).
CSS is way worse.
This is genuinely, exactly, what writing CSS feels like to me.

It’s a 32-year-old XML-based markup language with a bunch of elements generally considered obsolete and a bunch of things added which are meant to torture it into doing things it was never intended for. It’s not ideal, but it’s not even close to as much of a mess as CSS.
CSS was always great in theory. The problem was that early versions didn’t provide enough to do what it was basically designed for: desktop publishing. And by the time CSS could fully support desktop publishing, web development had moved in an application development direction, and CSS was being shoehorned into something it wasn’t designed for.
I kind of don’t see why HTML with CSS is bad for ebook puplishing, though.
