Changes are coming to how blue and black bins are collected across the province. Under regulations from the Government of Ontario (link is external), responsibility for collecting and processing recycling across Ontario will transfer to producers of paper and packaging. This means that Ontarians will be able to recycle the same materials no matter where they live.

What this will mean for curbside recycling collection in Ottawa:

  • Continue to put your bins out by 7 am on your collection day. They will be collected by a different truck and collection may occur at a different time of day than usual.
  • There will be minor changes to what can go in your blue and black bins as of January 1, 2026. A full list of items that can be recycled is available on the Circular Materials website(link is external). The City will provide more details in the coming weeks.
  • You can continue to use your existing standard sized blue and black bins.
  • Beginning on Thursday, January 1, 2026, you will no longer contact the City for any recycling-related services such as a broken bin or a missed collection.

More details will be provided in the coming weeks on who residents can contact for recycling collection services in 2026.

how is privatization ever good? Do you think you’ll get a tax break for a private company being told to do this? im genuinely curious.

can you imagine being told you can put out max 5lbs of paper, everything else is charged at $x rate/lb or whatever… only being able to use their specially fabricated that only they sell, bins?

I honestly don’t think there is anything good about this, but I may be wrong. who knows. regardless, I’m keeping an eye out for Metro Compactor Service to reappear on some scandal involving Miller Waste Solutions Group which they recently just acquired… the same company that helped set this whole thing up.

well they did have help from Circular Materials which is a not-for-profit organization thankfully…however they are governed by the same companies that supply products and packaging to consumers in Ontario. may I refer you to the board members of evil corporations. These are some of the companies individuals who made this decision, along with the Ford govt.

I just found all those whole typing this message, so take what I say with a grain of salt but personally… I trust none of those companies to properly handle my services, let alone the garbage they produce.

It means the companies that are responsible for producing these products are the ones responsible for dealing with the packaging they produced.

still don’t trust any of these companies to provide me with services without treating me like a way to profit… no company does things without gutting quality and maximizing profits, and now it’s being forced upon us by the govt with no other options.
