The navy frigate sent by Spain to accompany the humanitarian Global Sumud Flotilla of around fifty volunteer-crewed vessels taking aid to Gaza is unlikely to intervene to prevent any attacks by Israel on the fleet, which Israel has bombed and harassed nightly since its arrival in the Mediterranean.

Wasn’t it known from the start they were just there to fish people out of the water at best? To me these naval ships being sent always was more about the fact (especially in Italy) that public opinion has swung so far in support of Palestine that this relatively token gesture even happened.

It says something about the spread of anti-Zionism in the general public of the west that governments even felt necessary to have this fig leaf. That’s something that the Palestine movement can work with. It’s a sign of progress within the masses on this issue.

I appreciate this note of optimism because it just made me sad to see the one piece of good news in recent weeks taken away almost immediately.
