Hello Sopuli,

We have quite a few communities that have been abandoned / moderator has abandoned fediverse, so we are looking for moderators who would like to adopt some of these communities.

For the communities that we don’t find any people to moderate we will add a sticky post with information on how to adopt these communities and hopefully redirect people to an active community that has a somewhat similar purpose/topic.

List of communities below:

Hei Sopuli,

Meillä on melko paljon yhteisöjä, jotka on hylätty / moderaattori on lähtenyt fediversestä, joten etsimme moderaattoreita jotka haluaisivat ottaa joitakin näistä yhteisöistä hoitaakseen.

Yhteisöihin, joihin emme löydä moderaattoreita, laitamme pystyyn postauksen jossa selitetään miten kyseisen yhteisön voi ottaa hoitaakseen ja ohjaamme postauksessa käyttäjät samankaltaiseen, aktiivisempaan yhteisöön.

Alla on luettelo yhteisöistä:

Active communities in need of moderators \ Aktiiviset yhteisöt jotka tarvitsisivat moderaattoreita:

Communities that subscribers wish would be more active \ Yhteisöjä joiden seuraajat toivoisivat olevan aktiivisempia:

Some of the following are active communities, but all of them would need moderation \ Jotkin seuraavista ovat aktiivisia yhteisöjä, mutta jokainen niistä tarvitsisi moderointia:

Then we had a user who made an account, made million communities but left shortly after \ Meillä oli käyttäjä joka loi miljoona yhteisöä ja lähti sitten menemään:

Finnish cities \ Suomen kaupunkeja:

Language learning \ kielten oppiminen:

Operating systems, programming, tech \ käyttöjärjestelmät, ohjelmointi, tekniikka:

Spirituality, Religion, Philosophy \ Henkisyys, uskonto ja filosofia:

Hobbies \ harrastukset:

Random \ satunnaiset:

I’d also like to remind you all of donating to Lemmy’s developers, whether it’s via Patreon, Liberapay, crypto or other methods. They work full-time with this brilliant open-source software, and as there are no ads, donating is the only way to ensure it.

Lemmy’s developers are tankie transphobes. And if you’re gonna say it’s only Nutomic, I’m gonna retort that the rest of them put up with that cryptofascist. They don’t deserve a cent until they shut down lemmy.ml.

There seems to be quite a few completely empty communities on that list and while they have some subscribers I don’t think it’s worthwhile to keep them around. At least for random few I checked there’s already alternatives on other instances with same name so at least I don’t see any value on keeping an empty shell just in case.

A very good observation. The user who created bunch of communities that are completely empty also created some communities that will probably never have any real use case. At least I don’t believe there will be any use for a dead community named “cocaine”.

I’ll discuss this, thanks for your input!

Edit: we decided to remove some dead communities entirely and we’ll further discuss which ones could be just deleted.

I think the Fediverse/Lemmyverse needs a general solution or protocol to handle this situation. I would like to see a canned plan for what will happen to these communities if they aren’t claimed, and a timeline for when.

I think there needs to be some means of archiving abandoned communities so that they become read-only, but are still indexed and searchable on the fediverse (there might be perfectly good information and history that we want to preserve for future denizens of the Fediverse (fedizens?).

Then in the future, if someone comes along and tries to make a new community with the same name on the same instance, either:

    1. The old community gets revived under new management, or
    2. The old community posts remain read-only, perhaps all old posts get “versioned” or “generationed” in some way so that it’s clear they happened under prior management, but are included in the history of the new community that is “masking” its name.

I like some version of option 2, personally.

The problem of random communities coming and going over time will never end for lemmy, and for the future of the fediverse I think it’s important we come up with a solution that doesn’t involve either making ad-hoc requests for new leadership or deleting the communities entirely.

Just my two cents, thanks again for your efforts!

Edit: I notice some of these communities are literally empty. I feel like those should just be autodeleted after a certain amount of time. It’s basically the same as if the mod never made it.

Very good write up, and I mostly agree.

I’m not part of lemmy development and haven’t closely followed Pyfed development but I believe there has been some discussion around this. Especially since some communities that are indexed on sopuli are from instances that have shut down.

The reason why we went with “if anyone wants to pick up a community, here they are” and “we are adding a permanent redirect to abandoned communities” is because we noticed that some communities are indeed low activity but “high” subscriber count. We kinda wanted to offer new users answers for their searches: e.g. if they search for a soccer community - that currently exists but is empty - they find the community with a redirect to football community.

But you are right that this isn’t a very good permanent solution and I am also hoping for a native lemmy feature for this problem.

Thanks for the thoughts! We’ll have to discuss the possibility of just deleting the empty communities like you suggested.

Edit: we decided to remove some dead communities entirely and we’ll further discuss which ones could be just deleted.

I am very interested in !collapse@sopuli.xyz as I am a geologist and understand the physics/material reality of the cliff the earth has irrevocably launched itself off of.

I would be a new moderator, and I know this might be a touchy one to start with, but this is a topic I find I am driven to understand lucidly to a point most other people can’t handle thinking about because the reality is so hopelessly brutal.

Offer is open, I know I have lots of strong opinions and comment lots so I understand any reaction to this, but if no one else is interested I am willing.

!cplusplus@sopuli.xyz should probably be deleted and/or merged into https://programming.dev/c/cpp

I was hoping to get some Finnish C++ forum active there to differentiate, but since mine is the only post, I don’t think it’s going to catch on.

Though I don’t mind taking the mod hat if there is interest for Finnish C++ forum at some point.

      Good idea!

You could take over the community if you want, make a redirect post similar to the ones we have made in now-locked communities towards the programming.dev one, and lock the community for time being. You can unlock it anytime if there’s a need or you have an idea for the community.

      Would that sound good?

Awesome! I’ll make you a mod there and then you’ll see some options such as “only moderators are allowed to post”, which is kind of "locking the community (you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to).

You can almost just copy-paste the post on !arab@sopuli.xyz, post it in your community, and make it a “sticky” (I believe in lemmy-web-ui it’s called “feature post in community”).

You are free to do as you will though. It can be open for e.g. finnish c++ discussion too and still have the stickied post to redirect general discussion to the active programming dev community.

That would be totally fine! No point in having a dead community if there is one with atleast low activity, so we can make a sticky post there and redirect to dbzer0’s community!

I’ll write a similar post to all the redirect posts in a bit and then add it to the arab community on sopuli :)

Edit: redirect post set in that community now

If you use the default web-UI you should see them in our instance sidebar on the main page, if you use an app it varies where you see them. But you can always just go to sopuli.xyz via a browser and you should have it right there in the sidebar, below some general info :)

English: I can take Translator (which I’d love to re-name to Translation Studies) and Estonian. I won’t promise that the communities will get huge amounts of new members, but I can post some content to get things started. It ain’t much but it’s honest work!

Kuulostaa siltä että sinä olisitkin sitten just sopiva moderoimaan molempia yhteisöjä :)

I don’t know what the !mead@sopuli.xyz was supposed to be about but if it is meant to be about making mead it is unnecessary because there is already !homebrewing@sopuli.xyz

No need to have constant flow of content, as long as you guys have a community to go to and like to post to, it’s all good!

Glad to hear and woah, that sounds pretty cool, hope you had a good time! Sounds like the moderation is active enough :)

I doubt your community will ever attract a lot of bad actors and if something pops up we know that there are other eyes on the community and we can help. If you are not available it’s not the end of the world :) it’s the communities that have no eyes and the mod has clearly left fediverse that we worry about. Anyone can just post anything there.

Yeah many of the listed were created by the same user who just created a lot of communities and disappeared shortly after.

We will probably remove those which are completely empty and which won’t find a moderator (or post a redirect to a more active equivalent and lock the community for now).

I also see this as a good idea, but I checked out these communities and their mods seem to be also somewhat inactive on lemmy and there isn’t any more activity than on the sopuli one. While lemmy.world and SJW are really well administered instances that will deal with any issues quickly, I’d like to consider some options first maybe?

I would have never found the first one with the community name, so I’d like to ask if you happen to know any other communities like that on lemmy?

Ohh missed that! Am I completely wrong thinking that forumlibre is just a french speaking community for everything? Wondering how they would like us redirecting to them.

I mean we do have !languagelearning@sopuli.xyz that also has french learners. This community was meant as a catch-all language learning community with more activity for languages that don’t necessarily have an active community yet on lemmy. We can redirect there too if we don’t have a dedicated and active space yet!

Unlike the reddit equivalent !languagelearning@sopuli.xyz also accepts language specific questions and talk.
