I think that the the “white” option in the census was meant to include Middle Easterners, but the census is notoriously bad in the issue of categorizing ethnicities, so it’s just goofy cope on his part. It also seems to have been updated last year to make MENA its own category, to which this guy would belong, so his dumb argument is now also defunct in addition to be worthless to start with.

My experience with Iranian diaspora folk in the UK and Spain chimes with this. They might not like the regime (who would?) but that doesn’t mean they’re under any illusions about what else is on the table
