Basically I was thinking about how the Democratic party has a very poor cohesion, both ideologically and strategically. The question I asked was, how can people like Tlaib and Newsom be in the same party? It didn’t make sense to my brain that’s used to european parties where these people would be in a green and a christian dem party respectively.
So now I think of the Dems as more of a coalition of several micro-parties. In the media these would be called factions or caucuses (ala The Squad). This sort of explains the ideological rift between most progressive and most conservative members of the party. And if history of european liberal democracies shows anything, it’s that coalitions don’t last. I wonder with the current trends if the Dems will break up into smaller parties, plus some being absorbed into the Reps.
And I know that a dem break up is unlikely, as it destroys the two party assumption that the whole political structure of the US is built on, but I do wonder how long the internal contradictions can go on. I’m also just angered that any pro-trans or pro-palestine people in the party continue to associate themselves with Joe Gruesomes. I also limit this (tiny) analysis to Dems and not Reps (even though they also have caucuses) because I think that Reps are still way more disciplined as a party.
Any thoughts or opinions on this? Would love to hear counter arguments too.
I don’t think it’s even that coherent: it’s a bunch of careerist fucks running a consultant racket and donation farm. It has no goals except raise money and give it to consultants, and policies are just pretty words you tell people so they give you money and then you just do whatever because what are they gonna do, vote for the literal demons of the GOP?
They’ve lost any semblance of even being a slimy party machine and just exist in this weird detached limbo of just keeping the grift going while losing more and more of their base as they stand for nothing and do nothing.
American parties are legit not parties in the international sense. They don’t have national orgs, they have informal whips, etc. They are caucuses or more like voting lists in European countries. You cannot be a member of the democratic party, only the convention
Good rundown of how actual parties are illegal in the US https://jwmason.org/slackwire/political-parties-are-illegal-in-the-united-states/
