Remember when it would make a slightly different noise than usual so you would cancel the connection attempt because you knew it wasn’t going to work

Like a physician listening with a stethoscope…I could always tell when something wasn’t right.

I don’t miss the small disk space, the even smaller ram, the jumping through hoops to plug in a fuckin mouse, let alone a joystick (I was into flight sims), or the terrible internet speeds, or the fact that if someone picked up the phone you’d lose the 5MB file you’d been downloading for the past half hour.

But it is true that back then things felt much more physical. There were all kinds of small sensory feedback from the machine so that you’d know this thing was actually doing something. Nowadays you need a multimeter, a microscope, and 15 diagnostic tools to see if stuff has crapped the bed or not. Quality has gone up by orders of magnitude, so failures are much more rare, though.

I have so much nostalgia for the little clicking noises hard drives used to make.

I wish I could make my PC sound exactly like the Quantum hard drive in the Power Macintosh we had growing up.

a quick internet query turned this up: https://deervo.itch.io/diskclick. it includes a file for a “1984 quantum q540” and a “quantum bigfoot 2110at” and several others.

The clicking noises are great. Ehat isn’t great is the random thumping from my external drive on my desk which throws it’s noise weirdly and makes it sould like someone is knocking on my walls at 2AM.

Hell yeah, it felt more mechanical. And I can figure out mechanical stuff by looking at it and fucking around pretty often. Digital stuff less so.

No, but I miss when having a landline with some exposed wires. It literally picked up FM frequencies so you could hear music behind the dial-tone.
