Politics concerns everything, and everything under the sun has a political component. You can’t extract human relations from governance and political action.

Political (n) Of or relating to views about social relationships that involve power or authority.

One of many meanings, but the one most relevant to this post.

Also: Exhausted with the same damn argument of “Why does everything have to be political, there doesn’t need to be politics in x,y,z thing!” Jesus, the root of the word politics is the Greek word ‘polis’ which meant anything having to do with the citizens, the people, so yes, it’s all goddamn political.

    Polis (n)

    1. City
    2. Community

  • It is a shame, but then, what? Do we just tell everyone to avoid .ml/grad/hexbear and actively harm those communities because of the vitriol of insufferable people? I think that’s crap. Heaven forbid leftists have their own space without liberals and right wingers losing their shit over it. No. We’re not going anywhere and we shouldn’t have to. And no, .ml/grad and hex didn’t start this b.s. I’ve been here for awhile (even before this account was created) and there’s always been a condescending attitude against these communities like we deserve shit somehow for just existing.

It’s implicit in the comment. It’s the US that is carrying out the policy of attacking Iran’s nuclear program, apparently the user thinks that nobody should have nukes, inluding Iran, and how do we get to that point? Via US foreign policy against nations wanting to initiate any type of nuclear policy. What do they think is going to happen, someone waves a magic wand and all the nukes disappear? No. There is no condemation of the US’s actions in that post, only a vague ‘both sides are bad’ and then stating no nation should have nukes, functionally giving consent to the US because: Iran bad, no nation should have nukes, therefore US didn’t do anything wrong. Why not call the US out?

  • Oh, I’ve seen that community and, personally, I think it’s bullshit. But that’s me.

That’s precisely it. They’re so concerned with us and it’s sowing unecessary discord. People can disagree with us all they want but to continually drum up hate towards us is just plain childish.

See, I get why that was modded. Why precisely shouldn’t Iran (or any damn country for that matter) be able to build nukes? Why is the US and a select few the only ones allowed to? What gives the US the authority over a nation’s self determination? That’s besides the point too, as many sources (even many mainstream western ones) indicated there was no evidence Iran was building nuclear weapons, the nuclear program was explicitly for energy infrastructure, which makes the US actions even more egregious. I don’t see how the US can play world police when a particular nation is implementing it’s own policies, unless they are actively attacking another soverign nation (and then there would be a whole other set of procedures for engaging in conflict with such a nation) then what business is it of the US to take action against them?

  • I’ve seen threads as such, and the issue is a person (from outside .ml) will take a particular position, argue that point (i.e. China is an authoritarian hell-hole) and then refuse to listen to any counterpoint to the contrary. The mods only step in after these threads are several dozen responses deep and the non-ml user basically plugs their ears and refuses to listen to any other viewpoint but their own. I’ve seen this time, after time, after time again. The mods are perfectly fine with people’s criticisms, it’s when you have users whose sole mission is to tell us how wrong we are and how depraved we are for thinking otherwise accompanied with a litany of slurs, that the mods take action. Hell, if anything the mods let them rant and rave for too long at times before stepping in.

  • I understand all of that and I believe the backlash is unwarranted. I do ascribe to the mod’s political stance as I am a Marxist myself. I believe that due to decades of misinformation the general public is still scared of the communist ‘bogeyman’. I get why people don’t associate with .ml and I am fine with it. I can disagree with plenty of people politically and get along with them just fine. My problem is the fact that a majority of users can’t even coherently tell me why it is they are against Marxist views or they have a highly distorted idea of what constitutes Marxist/Communist thinking and then they immediately shutdown the dialogue and paint me (and all .ml users) with this broad brush of imaginary ideas of what we stand for. Like I said, I’m fine with it. If other people don’t even want to try and understand different views to bridge the divide and actually engage in honest discussion, I have nothing to say to them anyways. If your preconcieved notions trump anything I could say, then their mind is already made up and I’m alright with disengaging from those that have closed their minds off to alternate views than their own.

  • Some are talking about power consumption in this thread and I’ve had similar ideas. Gone are the days where I can run a beefy spec’d desktop in good conscience, it’s just such a resource hog. I have a laptop that stays in hibernate mostly. My other idea for a low power consumption home computer was to get a Le Potato single board and pair that with an e-ink monitor (there’s some really nice ones out there) which I think was sitting at maaaaybe ~5kwh. I think the more we can limit our power consumption, the better, all that electricty directy translates into coal being burned and additional CO2 being created. I’m no luddite, but it has impacted how I consume media which is now very mindful of the impact watching a few episodes/playing a couple hours of games versus just one or two hours of content on any given day.

  • Oh man, that’s awesome. It made me sad that the old version didn’t work through WINE. It ran, but at like double speed, which made the game too twitchy to play. I’ll have to bookmark that for when I’m at the library (my internet service at home is garbage right now).

Yep! My favorite so far was the scifi-themed golf game, can’t remember the name. I haven’t touched it in awhile since I’ve been busy.

The game that gets most of my attention these days is Shiren the Wanderer The Eye of God and the Devil’s Navel on PSP (through an emulator on Android). I just beat the DS version of Shiren weeks ago for the first time after playing off and on for about twenty years (I never really got serious about completing it until now, it was always a casual timewasting roguelike for me) and moved onto the PSP fan translation of Devil’s Navel.

  • Man, I never knew he was an ass.

Honestly, unless it becomes news I never dig down into a band enough to know whether or not one member or an another are pieces of shit.

The last time I remember was the front man from Queens of the Stone Age having multiple instances of attacking photographers at his show, which turned me off of QotS after that.

Sadly, I love Radiohead, but there’s no way I can conscientiously listen to Radiohead now.

Now it makes me nervous who else I listen to is a douche. Well, douche I can deal with to an extent, but genocide denial is a whole other level of fuckery.

Edit: From reading the article he is critical of Israel, but in that ‘both sides’ type of rhetoric, and doesn’t mention genocide at all, but regrettable lose of thousands of life. Which is the same wishy-washy rhetoric that many in the mainstream media use that don’t want to be accused of being anti-semites or pro-Hamas. Which basically amounts to denial but in an indirect way.

Ugh, I don’t see why at least one major figure can’t just grow some fucking balls and tell Israel to go to hell outright. Seems like everyone in the mainstream is so damn mealy-mouthed about this issue, it’s absolutely insane how much sway Israel has over the media in the US and Western countries in general.
