I’ll start out by saying that there are many good and charitable people in the Philippines. Some of the best people I’ve known live there. But there is a LOT of poverty and that breeds some of the worst things in society. Having spent a few years in western part of Luzon island, there are enough bad people around that it’s not hard to imagine a Filipino finding themselves in a situation where they are locally surrounded by very horrible things–murder, trafficking, etc. In the bigger cities, everyone knows that part of town where you don’t go after dark.

Thanks, I’ll try that feed. And good call on the software version. Looks like lemmy.ml is on v0.19.1 and lemmy.world is v0.18.5. So maybe it will be fixed when they update. I’ll keep an eye on it.

It’s common business practice for the first big companies in a new market/industry to create “barriers to entry”. The calls for regulation are exactly that. They don’t care about safety–just money.

I don’t know what I would do without RSS. I started with Google Reader back in 06 or so. Then went to Feedly, now Inoreader. Between that and podcasts, I have about 200 RSS subscriptions divided into categories: world news, local news, sports, science, entertainment, philosophy, etc. I don’t read every article of course, but I do have highlighted keywords to make sure I don’t miss important stuff when scanning.
