About the only real intensive agriculture historically is rice paddies

Amazonian, Aztec/Maya and some northern American pre colonial people practiced intensive agriculture to support large cities. Crops included corn, beans, squash, cacao, hot peppers, manioc, pineapple, potato, sweet potato, and a lot more.

This is not “both sides” but quite the opposite - there’s a good and progressive side (top of the stick) and a depraved and evil side (bottom of the stick). Famines in the USSR were caused by a multitude of factors - drought and (civil) war being the most prominent. The war was brought to the USSR by outside forces - the whites where financed by the UK and the US, WWII was brought to the USSR by Germany. So famine in the USSR was created by western forces more than anything.

After 1947 there were no known famines. Since famines were a regular occurrence before we can conclude that the Soviets effectively ended famines in their territory by then.

There’s no place in Europe you can’t get locally produced honey. If this is important to you get your honey from a local beekeeper, for a higher price obviously.
