I had one of these colleagues. He insisted that he respects force, but whenever I pushed back, homie would run crying to our mutual boss.

One time, I snapped and yelled at him that I am a 15 year veteran, I know how to do my job. I ended up being forced to apologize to him for not respecting his ‘many years of experience.’

I feel ya, I’m in the same place. Weed helps the rumination a lot but then I’m just high all the time and not really present. I decided to take a big step back from online messaging. Now I try to either text directly or do FaceTime. I dunno why, but, after basically needing Internet to live for 25 years, I just feel so ready to put it down now.

  • It was Jack Welch, and it was during the 1980s ‘Yuppie’, ‘Greed is Good’ era.

Fiduciary duty is cancerous in a way that has really accelerated Capitalism. It encourages businesses that would otherwise be entirely sustainable at a small size attempt to grow until they are incompetent, which causes a consistent breakdown/selloff cycle.

Imo this is a function of pensions being purposefully replaced with 401ks. It pinned more and more retirement funds to the performance of a stock market, ostensibly to encourage employees to feel staked in the company stock performance. But it was just a clever way to get away from direct-deposit pension funds.

  • This is basically how a rail cannon coil gun works, just with electromagnets that can reverse their polarity.

It’s a powerful way to accelerate anything — I think it’s most famously used in those types of metal roller coasters that start you at a flat-with-the-ground angle, and then just fuckin launch you up a ramp to 45° with electromagnets. The issue is that you need a fuckton of energy to do that.

What we need for true perpetual energy is to just capture that guy Blanka from Street Fighter.

  • You are honestly overcomplicating it. It’s not a psyop, it’s marketing and PR. Evil is terribly banal; it doesn’t take mustache-twirling villains, only average people who are willing to do whatever they need to do to avoid being in trouble themselves.

They need “Alligator Alcatraz” because Republicans figured out 25 years ago that a catchy name goes farther than anything more serious. It is why “Obamacare” is still reviled to this day, despite near unanimous support for the ACA. Nancy Pelosi shutting down Walz for his “weird” label was perhaps the biggest unforced error in political history.

  • I think about this comic probably once a week at this point. I don’t know if anyone will ever be able to boil the problem down any further than what’s here — “but what if we make a better world for nothing?”

Unfortunately I have tried to show this to people, or use the line that illustrates it, and the gist of the general response is “my comfort comes before our safety.”
