Now I’m thinking of the African guy talking about how gay sex means they “eat the poo poo”.
Sure, but like… maybe that data isn’t really relevant or trustworthy either if that’s how it was phrased?
Pollster: “Have you ever had sex with a woman?”
Closeted sexually active 28 year old gay guy when being gay could get you ostracized or killed: “Oh… y… yeah! I love the vaginas. So… slippery and… moist (gag)”
Pollster: “NICE!” high five
I think not of what we should do, only what we can do… to a flock of birds.
But will it run Doom?
Idgaf about the queen in particular. But, I dont get the countries marking her death as a holiday. She was the face of the UK, sure. Her entire queenhood was symbolic, though. She didn’t set any international policy or have any real role in their governments. I get annoyance, disdain, even indirect anger at the monarchy for being the symbol of the UK government. But this feels more hateful and targetted. It’s fine if that’s how they feel. I just don’t understand why.
Walrus operator does an inline assignment to a variable and resolves to the value assigned. If it is in a condition statement, like “if x := y:”, it assigns the value of y to x then interprets the expression of the condition as of it just said “if x:”. Functionally, that means the assignment happens regardless of the value of y, but the condition only passes if the value of y is “truthy”, i.e. if it’s not None, an empty collection, numerically equal to zero, or just False.
We use subtitles because the sound mixing is fucking terrible in most media now. It’s set up for massive theatres where dialogue sounds normal and gunfire or explosions sounds realistically loud. But I’m not trying to have realistically loud explosions in my living room on my Vizio, so the volume is set accordingly, meaning you can’t make out words half the time.
Alan Turing, the inventor of the first computer*, was castrated by the British Government for being gay.
FTFY
*Not exactly, but not to diminish his immense contributions to computer science
Except he got it wrong because he’s clearly not confident enough for supervillain. He wants to simp for the villain. He’s like the villains main or secondary stooge who takes all the personal abuse and asks for more.
Only when their anger aligns with major political policies of the current regime. No one is looking at someone belligerently pissed off at trans exclusion or lack of action on climate change and saying “Heh, Trump voters, ammirite!?” Yes, someone who is pissed off at gun control laws is not necessarily a Trump supporter, but if that is their main platform of concern that gets them riled up, barring any other context, it’s not unusual to put them in that camp. Nor is it ultimately all that harmful, as far as I can see, to do that even if turns out to be innacurate.
‘The partisan right’s ritualist wailing and gnashing of teeth over Colbert is quite revealing,” […] celebrators of the cancellation are ‘acting like they’re not coercing private corporations’ decisions to punish general dissent and accurate reporting of their attempt to cover up human trafficking and the rape of minors by the sitting President.’
Again, I’m not poopooing scientific endeavor. I love science. But this person seemed to be mystified that we weren’t all majorly reacting to this news as if this possible fact, in itself, was life changing. For most people, it changes nothing about their day to day lives.
For sure, not undervaluing scientific research and exploration by any means. But Angie’s post seemed to be a call to action or an expectation of a greater reaction to potential findings from the general public. But A) it’s honestly the first I’ve heard about any such news. And B) I don’t think the vast majority of people would have any idea how to even process that information, let alone get excited about it or understand it’s full implications, or to have any sort of reaction to it at all.
Don’t get me wrong, understanding the nature of the universe is valuable and noteworthy. But how would that information meaningfully impact anyone’s life or change their behavior or worldview beyond a general awe at the unfathomable mysteries we already have towards space as we’ve understood it for centuries? Especially in a way that would ne noticeable to this person. Am I meant to stare up at the sky from 8:15 to 8:30 every other night with my mouth agap while I try to wrap my mind around the spacetime bubble we all exist on the surface of? Or can I just eat dinner?
That’s a weird strawman. I’ve never heard anyone use that argument to justify dismissing the Communist Manifesto. Like ever. Nothing close to it in fact.
Sure, but do you want to risk catastrophy as a way to filter out bad developers?
