100km is a huge ride! Nice work. See anything cool along the way?
My theory is that driving a vehicle feels the same as waiting in a line/queue, since you’re not doing anything active. So people try and minimize their time “waiting” as much as possible. Even if they’re already traveling at an extreme speed. Basically cars fuck with our brains.
I recently watched this film and loved it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Language_(2024_film)?wprov=sfla1 . Big Wes Anderson vibes with lots of weird surreal comedy, and features lots of good bits of ephemera.
And as steever mentioned earlier, the national film board of Canada is a good start!
God dammit this pisses me off. Ecological regulations need sharp, razor teeth.
I love this. It’s so true. I always wondered why people were reluctant to ride a bike because it seemed like “work” or “exercise”. It’s easier than walking, and much faster to boot.
I’d say go to a bike shop and try out some e-bikes. Find one that fits and that you enjoy riding, and start taking it for fun rides! I’d highly suggest a rack and some panniers (saddle bags) for carrying stuff - it makes it way easier to run errands and stuff via bike.
20 miles is a big bike commute, and riding on the edge of the highway isn’t super fun. But as others have said, maybe there are alternate routes. A 25 mile route through paths/side streets would be way more enjoyable than a highway shoulder.
Good luck on your biking endeavour! It’s a great addition to life.
The difference is that we, as a vehicle-sharing community, have saved 19 trucks worth of money and there are 19 less trucks sitting around on streets and in parking lots. We’ve all been fed personal vehicle propaganda non-stop for like 100 years, I don’t blame you.
You know there are “actual real adults” who live without a car and have managed to navigate all the problems you’ve mentioned. It’s not impossible, it just requires some changes that sometimes add inconvenience.
For example, when I need to use a truck I either borrow or rent one for a day or two. The number of vehicles that just sit around unused is a testament to the fact that there are way more cars on the road than necessary. And we’re all footing the bill for it with our taxes, lungs, and sanity.
Came here to say exactly that! TD is the worst.
Madness is right. If only we didn’t have to create these things to generate dollar.
Where are we going? is a dime song
Big agree. Good Time turned me into a huge Pattinson fan.
I love that movie, and that fight scene, but damn you’re right.
Propaganda is a powerful manipulator. Design/ad budgets change how people think about things. Fossil fuel companies should absolutely not be allowed to spend money on ads: that money should go toward climate reparations.
Thank you, I had completely forgotten about this video! You made my evening.
Space between paragraphs AND a first line indent? Disgusting.
I’ve played with enough hockey players to know that our collective way of teaching our sons how to respect women is broken. It is absolutely a culture problem.
