Nice! I remember this looking promising before, but not having Linux support. Now it seems like 2.0 is properly cross-platform, so I’ll have to give it a spin.

Yeah. I guess it might be different from client to client, but it seems like it can be hard to tell that the community is shut down.
I was just pruning my subscriptions the other day. Unless the lemm.ee comms had a stickied ‘moving’ post, I can’t visually tell any difference from these and your average inactive sub.
Here’s good too, you’re fine!
Great question; I don’t know. I just used the Voyager ‘Crosspost’ menu option.
The community is !asklemmy@lemmy.world. But I don’t know how/if I can share relative links to particular posts.
Let me know if this doesn’t quite fit. Thought a lot of these would be of interest to folks in this comm.
Maybe if you spot some interesting communities in the thread there, they’d be worth giving their own post here.
Ooh, that sounds handy, I’ll have to look into it.
Wow, not having paid attention for a while, I’m very surprised to see that Nepo fell outside the top 10.
Heh, unusual to see ジャパン written out that way in the logo.
Sounds neat though. Have you been/plan to go?
Thanks, you too! Keep taking those notes even if you never look back at them - deciding what to write is what really helps.
As always, I appreciate the weekly threads here. I don’t usually have an update to give but it’s always a chance to reflect. Plus, it’s encouraging to see all the support, and all the different folks at different levels working through the ups and downs.
Better this past couple weeks. I feel like my motivation is rising again. I’ve got habits and some daily routines in place to do at least something anyway, but progress is better when I’m wanting to do more.
The term for this is openwashing. Seems like it’s been ramping up for a while. Any software or tech vendors know that open(source) is an attractive point, especially to devs. But they don’t want to deal with the realities of it.
Most famous example in recent times is OpenAI, which has that name but not much else.
That’s also really awesome! Wasn’t aware of that until after making this post.
It’s not in-store, but if an app is relatively mainstream it very well might have reviews on https://alternativeto.net/
Interesting thoughts. I feel like there’s research behind the common belief that ‘immersion’ is key, but I don’t know that. Always worth questioning those assumptions. And in that vein, I agree with your idea that more studies like that should be done.
Surely it has been done to some extent though? I don’t know. These Wiki articles and their references might be a good starting point:
Seems self-apparent to me (again, just conjecture) that learning through input only is not the best way as an adult. But I don’t think there’s any getting around the necessity of massive amounts of input. Every language has tons of exceptions and irregularities. You just have to build intuition at some point. Have to practice understanidng.
I wonder if SteamDeck counts toward desktop share here? It kinda is a desktop OS, even though it’s mainly used on a handheld device. Either way, I think that contributes a lot to normalization and stability of the ecosystem, if not device count.
The big factor though is probably just a shrinking market. For people that aren’t computer nerds or businesses, it’s getting less likely they own a laptop or desktop, and more likely they think their phone is good enough.
When I’m frustrated with immersion, I try to shift my focus from understand-most-of-it to pick-out-something I do understand. From that perspective, I do OK, recognizing some common word pretty often. It’s not much, but I’ll take any small win I can get. On the flip side, maybe pick out certain words that give you trouble and focus on why.
Also, try going back to easier/repeat material. Going back a few chapters in the book or rewatching beginner videos or rereading level 0 graded readers until you’ve practically memorized them. I tend to find some material I can look at and say ‘this used to be hard, I am making some progress at least!’
Motivation is just hard though, good luck!
As someone who’s started and stopped a bunch, I’d say remember the cliche: “The best time to do it was 10 years ago. The second best time is now.” Don’t let any setbacks distract you from making progress. That effort now opens up future possibilities.
I really like that they, and some of the other big paid ones, offer lifetime. I haven’t tried it, but I’m at least curious.
Looks like you’re learning Japanese, so rest assured there are a ton of resources out there to choose from. Sometimes the hard part is narrowing it down.
I’m always surprised how chill it is here. The exact opposite of Place, as far as I remember. I threw this out there and drew the outline. Filled in a couple inside pixels, but then fun and helpful strangers carried it all the way through to completion. And it survived to the end even. Nice!
It’s so frustrating how every subscription service will do this.
They’ll provide some good value for a while. Then after a decent number of people are hooked, it’s upsell upsell upsell. Props for cancelling and not just being OK with that!
What are you learning with instead now?
I think all 3 of the DS games were really great, but I especially appreciated the more action-oriented approach in Ecclesia. It’s still very recognizably in the Iga-vania line, but has a little bit of the flavor from the older CV style too.
