It can certainly be a hobby that is done for fun with no time constraints, where you can just make whatever you please, but it can also be stressful, soul-sucking necessity once money gets involved.

The director of the school was apparently pocketing a lot of the money from school funding initiatives, and offloading a lot of the purchases that were supposed to be done onto the last year students. I remember our class being chosen to buy new furniture for an entire classroom in the name of “giving something back”.

Capital is very important, but it’s also a massive undertaking, it literally takes years to finish if one engages with it properly, taking notes. I’m still getting through it myself slowly myself and it did debunk a ton of “leftist assumptions” I had.

ML’s on lemmy are predominantly of the “deprogram” variety (in reference to the deprogram podcast and r/thedeprogram being quite large on reddit), and generally they’re a laughing stock given the narratives they parrot that are so de-attached from the material reality and their various mannerisms when it comes to arguing. One of the larger narratives is that the west and western imperialism is horrible (which is true), and that whoever is opposed to it must be a force for good or something, which manifests as uncritical support for China, Russia, Iran even though they’re both imperialist bourgeoisie states too.

I see some people claim that they’re some paid Russian shills, which is wrong. They do it for free, with a genuine belief because that’s what their community says and does.

There wasn’t really a material need to invent concepts such as agriculture, debt and other kinds of concepts we recognize as part of documented human history and development. There’s no need to farm if few humans there are can sustain themselves via hunting and gathering, neither do you need wheels for transportation. Once there was a historical need due to higher populations or weather not allowing foraging, that’s when the concepts got invented and allowed us to build on that with other discoveries and concepts that led us here.

To answer the question, it didn’t make things better, but it didn’t make things much worse either - the status quo is preserved as always. The concentration camps that Trump is boasting about (such as the Alligator camp or whatever it’s called) were previously opened by Biden, ICE was also being maintained to forcefully deport people, Israel is still being funded all the same by the US whether it was Trump or not, the only difference that Trump is being more open about these things and are expanding these operations which isn’t good at all but doesn’t shake the status quo at all.

Harris didn’t address any of these things, in fact she promised to expand on anti-immigration as part of opportunism.

At the same time, that’s the wrong question to ask - merely making things better isn’t enough given how it can always be reversed when wind blows a slightly different way no matter the party. What needs to happen is for the present state of things to change entirely, that’s the only way towards permanent improvement for the majority, which is what I meant in my original comment.

If these are the progressive reformists, then it’s probably time to realize that status quo won’t change if them or DSA were magically put in charge. They’re still part of the ruling class and have their interests, the only way to achieve actual change is via workers themselves organizing and making change happen - that’s the actual role of the left, not praying that some kind capitalist candidate brings about change for them (they won’t as seen historically).

But at the same time, workers aren’t likely to “have enough” and organize on their own, instead opting to keep clinging onto this false hope and keep rallying behind “least bad” option, so the situation is abysmal.

• If you’re an ultra, you’re likely too busy shitting on other communists from the comfort of the armchair to look for a relationship

• If you’re a ML or Maoist, you probably don’t want a relationship to spend more time “reading theory” (watching youtube slop)

• If you’re a Trotskyite, you’re likely already in a sex offender registry

• If you’re a Bordigist, you’re playing hard mode when it comes to getting a relationship as you refuse to be a usufructuary traitor to the health of the species (you avoid drinking and smoking and all like the plague)

• If you’re a revolutionary Marxist who has read theory, then you’ll drive people away with your revolutionary aura

• If you’re a Marxist who hasn’t read theory, then you’re a liberal who shouldn’t have any problems finding a relationship
