Here’s an idea. Perhaps watches are items with a legacy of lasting years and years? With people wanting to treat them as such? Once the market is saturated and prospective customers already satisfied with what they have, of course you’ll stop selling them.
Not sure I can specifically answer your question, because I’ve not used Batocera. However having used Emudeck and Retrodeck, I prefer Retrodeck. It’s far less ‘big’ and cumbersome, easier to install, less to worry about, and I feel simpler to operate. Personal opinion, though!

Patents can cover many aspects of design. Sometimes, these aspects are positive and deserve protection for the original inventors. Other times, the claims could be so obscure and ‘thats obvious to anyone’ that it’s a waste to protect them - but (sometimes ignorant) patent attorneys fail to do their research and award patents anyway.
It could be that the keyboard being below the screen in that form factor was considered novel. It could be the trackball used in the centre. It could be the two combined, then attached to a phone. It could be the shaping and ergonomic aspect of the keyboard. It could be raises or detents to aid location of keys for fast typing on a handheld device.

The curious thing is that from her perspective, she was only swimming straight the whole time, and only expending energy going straight. It was the ‘gifted’ energy of the tide that caused the oscillation (from our perspective).
Just struck me as interesting to think that from her point of view she was swimming as straight and as efficiently as was possible.
