There’s a lineagoOS fork that comes prepackages with microG as well, helping to keep google services style stuff working (maps links etc) without using any actual google services. It’s my daily driver, would recommend!
YMMV - some stuff still flat out doesn’t work if it’s too reliant on google services. Graphene is definitely better in that regard, if you have a pixel.
Outer wilds is just ridiculously good. Somehow the DLC matches the OG story’s level of insanely good. Best game I’ve ever played, or probably ever will.
Its a solid stand-in for a mid-tier laptop! Most everyday laptop stuffs like web browsing and code editing it drives like a charm!
Don’t expect too much, though! From my experience video editing is a bit too heavy for the lil guy - and some softwares can be kinda tough to run due to the sandboxed nature of steamOS (eg visual studio code, librewolf).
I think switching to another OS like Cashy or (if it doesn’t get axed?) Bazzite would probly be the way to go if you intend to use it for more than simple apps & web browsing!

Oh, an absolute all time great. Fantastic background music when you’re focused on homework or something, but equally enjoyable to sit and focus on all the nuance and details.
But the best part is how perfectly the music aligns to the overall tone and atmosphere of the game. Hell, it even does a tremendous amount of storytelling itself!

As someone working on wrapping up my bachelor’s in software engineering… Yeah… Fuck frameworks.
Everything I’ve been taught thus far has been nice, neat, logical code that has been explained completely. How does memory get allocated for that string? What exactly is a memory stack? How do pointers work? It all just made sense.
Then I get to the last 10 classes of my degree, and as a prerequisite for the last 9 I got treated to “java frameworks”. The classwork essentially teaches me to explicitly ignore how the framework accomplishes the end result, and to instead focus on memorizing bullshit one-line commands that are specific to whatever jackass framework I’m working in.
I’ve spent like 3 weeks straight watching crash course after crash course, trying to find anyone that actually explains the fundamentals of frameworks. Best I could find was an explanation of MVC (model/view/control), but I still don’t see how all that bullshit is easier that writing your own code!!
Fuck frameworks.

There’s a proof of concept video in there where it’s shown connected to a PC with a standard USB ribbon pinned to a 2.0 A head… Might have to give it a go someday!

Metroid dread runs pretty great on Deck, too! But last I checked Mario odyssey is something like 10fps, same with the mario galaxy switch port 😢

I dug into this a bit and couldn’t find and easily locatable guides to setting this up on Deck (at least, not without disabling the read-only protections of the system), and I ended up finding Boxes, made by Gnome! It didn’t seem to want to download Debian on its own, but I just downloaded it from Debian.org and it was installed in like 10 minutes! Couldn’t believe how easy it was - and all with a single flatpak app! 😃
Thanks! Definitely true about the reinstall! I guess in my case I worry it’ll cause a hard crash right when I’m too kaput from a long day to go troubleshoot, and just wanna drop into a relaxing game before bed, ya know? Like at that point I’m just gonna sleep early and fix it another day lol. It’s nice to have an ultra-reliable gaming rig around, and without tampering with CSS the steam Deck is certainly that!
The artwork plugin is another one I hadn’t used, since I figured I’d have to find & sideload images on my own – I didn’t realize it has crowd-sourced submissions to pick from!! Makes it infinitely worth installing!
I’ve been resisting installing decky since my last (LCD) Steam Deck ended up a bit janky from too many mods 😅 but this post inspired me to make the jump and install the CSS loader for the first time!
I leaned super hard into the OLED’s blacks and picked red as an accent, since saturated red really ‘pops’ on an OLED screen. I think it turned out pretty nice!!
