  • Whenever I come across one of these lemmy.ml posts where this general topic of leftists shitting on western libs comes up, it always makes me curious.

I understand what y’all hate. I regularly hear what doesn’t work (voting). But I never hear a concise, specific, tactical thing that I as an individual could do.

Sometimes I’ll see very generic notes about how “nothing’s ever going to change until a unified, violent, upheaval happens”, but that’s about the closest I’ve ever seen.

So please. Indulge me. I’m a US lefty lib. What should I be doing if I want to help leftist causes (pro-labor / break up corporations / etc).

Because I swear to gods. According to folks here:

    • voting? Doesn’t work
    • donating? You’ll never outspend
    • grass roots whatever? They’ll stomp you out
    • acts of coordinated violence? We’d never say that explicitly

What then? I hate the current trajectory of my country and feel helpless to change anything with the tools I have at hand. Give me one practical thing I can do to help unfuck this mess.

(And to the FBI listening in. I’d never do anything illegal based on advice of Internet strangers. I just wanna hear them say, out loud, what I think they really want to say)

It’s easy if you don’t know how shitty the other 90% have it. That’s the thing about privilege. The folks who have it assume that everybody has it like they do (i.e. that privilege isn’t really a thing, everybody has equal opportunity, racism is dead, etc).

  • Oh really? My bad. I’ve always heard it used specifically to talk about corrupted implementations of Marxism. E.g. Animal Farm.

Err, maybe I’m confusing Marxism and socialism.

I’m still not exactly clear on how any of it avoids corruption. At the end of the day, somebody decides whose street gets paved first.

  • Was going to say, is there anything negative that isn’t something-ist?

In a deterministic universe, every negative behavior or attribute can be traced back to something outside of the person’s control. Therefore any criticism of anything can be traced back to something that isn’t that person’s fault and is therefore something-ist?

This has a whiff of the paradox of tolerance. Am I being reductive in choosing to skirt past childhood trauma and psychological disorder when I say that Hitler was evil? Yes. But also fuck that. He was evil. And I don’t give a shit as to the “why” of it. (Well, I do. But only to the extent that we can learn from it and try to prevent it from happening again).

edit: yeah yeah. Godwin’s law. It’s just such a useful illustration tool

  • The folks saying that this is ablesist. I hear you and I think I mostly agree. But this is one I kind of struggle on. Which “haha person is stupid” kinds of things are making fun of people who are mentally handicapped? And which ones are just making fun of people for being plain old stupid? Or is it ablesist to say that a person behaving stupidly is stupid?

Like, if you’re making a meme and want to portray the anti-vaxer or nazi or whatever as being stupid or cruel or whatever, how do you do that without being ablesist? (“Inteligence is biological”, “psychopathy is a disease”, etc)

edit: oh whoops. And fuck tankies. Forgot to add that

Perfect meme to describe what’s happening. Yes, fedi has some UX issues and is not very beginner friendly.

But also, people have gotten so used to being spoonfed content from an algorithm that tells them what they want to see that they can’t handle the prospect of “build your own algorithm”

Corpo-curated-content is a hard drug and most people don’t realize that they have an addiction.

  • It’s a horrendous thing. To see a person killed before their time when they didn’t have to die. Just like what happens to thousands of Americans each year who are denied coverage. If we’re actually honest with ourselves, the only reason this one is seen as a tragedy by politicians and CEOs is that there was no profit to be had in it.

    edit: spelling

I always kinda wonder about this. Why? If you’re alone on a highway what difference does it make to cruise in the left lane vs the middle?

“What if I’m in the middle lane and come up on someone slower than me?” You hop left, pass, and then hop back to mid.

“What if I’m in the left lane and someone comes up behind me going faster?” You hop right, let them pass, and then hop back left.

Feels identical. So why so many people cruise in the left is kinda confusing to me. Just going against the rules of the road for funzies?

Personally I zone out so I cruise in the middle in case I don’t notice the person in my rear view. Also easier to notice coming up on someone ahead of me than some speed demon in the rear view.
