  • The CGT champagne trade union said the punishment was not sufficient.

“What we are asking for is the downgrading of the harvest” in the zones where the offences were committed so it could no longer be used to produce champagne, said Jose Blanco, CGT general secretary.

Every year, around 120,000 seasonal workers are recruited to pick the grapes grown across 34,000 hectares (84,000 acres) in the Champagne region.

Its peculiar to me for the trade union to be demanding these areas be unclassed as fit to grow grapes for champagne, as that isn’t supposed to be a political thing. Or so I thought at least it was botanical.

It seems like the trade union would want these regions unclassed because the value of their grapes would inherently increase if some of the supply of grapes for real champagne was artificially reduced to even less than 34k hectares. It feels like theyre just leaning on this opportunity to make money more than giving a shit about the actual issue. Otherwise why wouldnt they just call for the businesses growing in the area to be forced to hand over their operations to someone else?

  • “PBS and NPR were chartered to provide objective journalism,” Bozell wrote. “Instead, we got drag shows for kids, gushing coverage of Democrats, and silence or smears for conservatives.”

This is that “reality has a liberal bias” hitting hard. PBS and NPR are the only forms of media that still abide by the fairness doctrine and present an actual “both sides”. No matter how ludicrous one side may be, they still do their best to present it in a way that sounds like it isnt insane. Their only loyalty is to presenting information in a way that doesnt align with any particular bias.

So when they present both sides as level-ly as possible it isnt insane enough for far right nutjobs who are used to gargling fox news all day, even though it certainly doesnt treat far right perspectives nearly as harshly as it should (given the facts of reality).

At the end of the day, this a death knell for the truth in an already post-truth era. Fuck all the assholes that voted for this and fuck this country in general at this point, honestly

  • Calling the death of Del Monte foods a tariff casualty while attaching graphic evidence that Americans just dont want canned fruits and vegetables anymore is pretty stupid.

People are now more health conscious on average than American consumers have ever been. Most consumers are wise enough now to realize that if they want greenbeans or whatever its best to buy fresh beans and cook them. The canned alternative has so much salt in it that it might as well be a corned beef hash.

Like seriously, if you put as much table salt onto fresh cooked beans as comes in the average can you wouldnt even find them edible anymore. That is the death of Del Monte. Not tariffs. Tariffs were just the death knell of what consumer behavior already started decades ago. No one wants to eat 30% of their DV of sodium in a serving of beans
