You have to use a 3rd party tool like this to disable it and then install an old version if you don’t want it.

So by default AI is everywhere and you get to help train windows AI to generate infinite garbage.

There are ways around the account requirement, or there used to be a few months ago. I bypassed it on a new laptop. But even after all that they show ads everywhere and it requires hours of tweaks just to get the OS to not blatantly spy on you and spam you with ads or put all your files in onedrive. Win11 is the worst computer experience I’ve ever had. They put copilot in the fucking notepad app.

You can make gnome more or less like mac with a few extensions, which works well in my experience. Extensions like apps menu, places indicator and dash to dock (or dash to panel) are useful.

You can make kde more or less like mac by sorting through a very comprehensive configuration gui, which is great for people who want it but not necessarily new users.

You could use tailscale and sign up for a mullvad exit node in a foreign country for $5 a month.

Or if your seedbox/jellyfin server is outside the country you can set up tailscale on it and use it as an exit node and route everything through that.

I just had windows update a windows 10 install to windows 11 without my permission, so I nuked it and put bluefin linux on it and I have never had a better experience with linux before. The universal-blue project is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone interested in linux.

Windows 11 took hours of tweaking, with two different tweakign tools, just to get it to not put ads and the AI panopticon in every corner of every default app, and even then you can never really tell if you were truly successful or not, or if it will all get reverted the next time windows updates. Fucking ridiculous.

If you have to stay on windows for whatever reason, move to an LTSC version.

At the moment Bazzite is better than SteamOS, but it doesn’t support dual booting because windows has a way of changing things and ruining dual boot setups. I’m sure someone has figured out a way to do it, but it’s not officially supported.

It’s best to install it on a seperate drive, and then use the bios to switch boot drives.

Bazzite is very user friendly, very stable, has most things you want setup and running by default, and works great.
