I really like the T1000E. It’s all in one so no DIY if you aren’t about that. It’s small (think of a thick credit card) and has pretty good battery life too. It’s really easy to just slip into a pocket or bag and go. Of course the performance isn’t quite as good as nodes with big antennas but it does very well for the size

20 miles one way is going to be a rough commute to start. I agree with other comments about riding for fun to get the setup right for you and build endurance

I don’t know if this is feasible for you but maybe get a bike rack and drive part way, park somewhere public and ride the rest of the way in?
