  • It’s worse than you think.

The author criticizes national-level projects by proposing projects that are entirely handled provincially (or even municipally, specifically in Toronto & Ontario). Yes, this is TVO, which is Ontario-specific, but confusing the responsibilities and capabilities of two different levels of government is not beneficial.

This shouldn’t be an either-or situation, but more of let the nation focus on one, and the province on the other. That said, bolstering the judicial system and adding some doors isn’t really going to do much for the economy…

  • For years, public safety organizations have used Twitter as an effective way to share information with the public in real time, Levy said.

And for years, rampant misinformation has spread virally in real time thanks to these same actions. The number of times I’ve been stuck in some sort of lock-down because of a supposed shooter in the area, that was actually half-way across town, is just more evidence that social media never should have been used for spreading any sort of official warning about situations.

This kind of info should be posted to the official site of the organization, and if it’s actually something that people in the area **need ** to know about, sent directly to people’s phones (in a manner similar to the Amber Alert system).

  • Adaptation is what you do when you’ve already failed to avoid causing the issue.

According to Carbon Brief, as of 2017 the region was already experiencing 1.8 C warming (https://www.carbonbrief.org/mapped-how-every-part-of-the-world-has-warmed-and-could-continue-to-warm/). From the climate atlas page linked in the article, it would appear things have worsened since (projected around 2.2 C).

We’re lucky that a bit of warming helps some aspects in this region (ie. longer growing season), but there’s a lot that we’ll need to do to adapt to changes in the water cycle that comes from less snowmelt, increased freezing rain, changes in heatwave times/durations, etc.

From what I’ve read in the report, it’s very light on the details of how the city will adapt to these changes. There are a lot of forming “working groups” to come up with ideas, but not a lot of real action.

Still, a step in the right direction is a step. So I’ll take it, but we do need to get a bit of a move on here.

  • Good stuff. I love how it’s grown and look forward to seeing more voices discuss the issues that arise.

I’m working on growing !greater_sudbury@lemmy.ca myself, and have tried to limit to 1 or 2 posts per day, just to keep them coming and leave openings for other locals to step in, but without the same kind of response.

Perhaps I’m the one that needs to take on a more aggressive seeding technique…
