I’m a stay-at-home father of two young boys in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. My interests include Canadian Soccer, gardening, transit, and environmentalism.
Mastodon: @srgray@cansoccer.social
I admit, I had to look up Liz White. I’m not sure why you bothered to include someone who manages less than 250 votes while ignoring the dozen other party leaders with similarly limited support.
She has an interesting perspective but, like other micro-parties, the Animal Protection Party is not likely to meaningfully contribute to a minority government (even with proportional representation)
It’s worse than you think.
The author criticizes national-level projects by proposing projects that are entirely handled provincially (or even municipally, specifically in Toronto & Ontario). Yes, this is TVO, which is Ontario-specific, but confusing the responsibilities and capabilities of two different levels of government is not beneficial.
This shouldn’t be an either-or situation, but more of let the nation focus on one, and the province on the other. That said, bolstering the judicial system and adding some doors isn’t really going to do much for the economy…
So, from my understanding, the bill dies, but the petition persists. Thanks for clearing that up!
Once the election is officially called on Sunday, will the bill be considered dead and have to be reintroduced in the next parliament? In effect, don’t petitions also die when the bill associated with them dies?
It may as well be delayed until the bill is re-introduced with the next government, as it may not even be re-tabled in the House with its current deficiencies.
This is true (about an hour before any official policy was released), which means it was published as a half-informed leak instead of news of actual policy. However, claiming an (inaccurate) leak as released policy remains misleading.
Like most USian news sources, the article is misleading. Ford said he will add a 25% export tax on electricity IF tariffs persist. He did not provide a timeline on exactly when he might do it. He referred to this as “keeping the powder dry”
This sounds cool, but it doesn’t look like it’s intended to ever go to market.
Maybe there will be a pivot with the current political situation state-side, but that doesn’t seem to be the purpose of this project.
Still, a project worth rooting for! I just signed up to receive updates straight from their website: https://projectarrow.ca/
If I see any, I’ll be sure to let you know!
!greater_sudbury@lemmy.ca is actually the 2nd or 3rd oldest city-based community on lemmy.ca . It’s not very active, but should definitely be added to this list.
Also, !canadasoccer@lemmy.ca would be a good community to add to the soccer category.
For team-specific Canadian-based soccer teams, there’s !torontofc@lemmy.ca of the MLS (US-league with 3 Canadian-based teams). Other MLS sides include Vancouver Whitecaps and CF Montreal, which I don’t think have a community created.
None of the 8 Canadian Premier League teams, nor any of the numerous League1 Canada sides have taken steps to establish their communities yet (as far as I know).
Peertube is the Fediverse equivalent. It needs more content, and more instances to host said content, but it’s a good start.
For years, public safety organizations have used Twitter as an effective way to share information with the public in real time, Levy said.
And for years, rampant misinformation has spread virally in real time thanks to these same actions. The number of times I’ve been stuck in some sort of lock-down because of a supposed shooter in the area, that was actually half-way across town, is just more evidence that social media never should have been used for spreading any sort of official warning about situations.
This kind of info should be posted to the official site of the organization, and if it’s actually something that people in the area **need ** to know about, sent directly to people’s phones (in a manner similar to the Amber Alert system).

Ah. I suspected ESP had wifi buit-in, but I’ve never used ESP myself.
If the power draw is about the same as a security camera, it could perhaps be plugged into one of the small solar units meant for an external camera.
Now that I know it’s wifi, I may just need to get one and see if it’ll work with my solar cells. Should be a fun experiment!
Thanks for answering my questions!
The kids doesn’t mention any wifi/zigbee/z-wave capabilities, which would mean it would need to be connected to your HA unit with a cord of some sort (it references a USB cable on the page). That’s a hardwire connection (as opposed to a wireless connection).
From what I’m seeing, these all need to be hardwired in, but maybe I’m just not digging far enough.
Is that correct?
Ouch!
WAQI is currently pulling 196 ug/m3 for Sudbury into my Home Assistant.
Out of curiosity, which AQ sensors did you pick up? A link would be great so I can see if they’d be compatible with HA.
That’s interesting. Did a Jazz bar open up somewhere in Sudbury in the past couple years, or are you just a huge fan? Would be great to have a new haunt playing something different than every other bar in the region…
Adaptation is what you do when you’ve already failed to avoid causing the issue.
According to Carbon Brief, as of 2017 the region was already experiencing 1.8 C warming (https://www.carbonbrief.org/mapped-how-every-part-of-the-world-has-warmed-and-could-continue-to-warm/). From the climate atlas page linked in the article, it would appear things have worsened since (projected around 2.2 C).
We’re lucky that a bit of warming helps some aspects in this region (ie. longer growing season), but there’s a lot that we’ll need to do to adapt to changes in the water cycle that comes from less snowmelt, increased freezing rain, changes in heatwave times/durations, etc.
From what I’ve read in the report, it’s very light on the details of how the city will adapt to these changes. There are a lot of forming “working groups” to come up with ideas, but not a lot of real action.
Still, a step in the right direction is a step. So I’ll take it, but we do need to get a bit of a move on here.
Good stuff. I love how it’s grown and look forward to seeing more voices discuss the issues that arise.
I’m working on growing !greater_sudbury@lemmy.ca myself, and have tried to limit to 1 or 2 posts per day, just to keep them coming and leave openings for other locals to step in, but without the same kind of response.
Perhaps I’m the one that needs to take on a more aggressive seeding technique…
They should be on Mastodon, but that transition seems quite unlikely this election cycle.

Aslo wanted to note, the federal NDP is on BlueSky, although they aren’t as active as they should be. There’s some provincial accounts too, although that varies from province to province.
Here’s a few of their handles for those looking:
