Playing a single character is usually not going to go well. Some characters are that flexible or always at least not a bad choice to play, but it’s very limiting.

It’s not quite rock paper scissors, but you’ll certainly see heroes that have specific strengths and others that can exploit particular weaknesses, and the items excentuate the strengths or paper over weaknesses depending on your needs for a game.
