  • Sure, but the system in place seems like a good idea to combat hateful and batshit insane posts or comments. Unfortunately the Android app I have to use for now doesn’t support the user tags it seems, except a symbol for new accounts. I have to admit that a key feature I liked in Raccoon was customizable user tags. Apart from the normal ones (OP, mod, admin, etc.) I also had one each for bigots, spammers and for general idiots. The picture support will be necessary for our hobby too. I’m curious to see how it’ll develop…

  • The community organisation and post & comment features seem rather rich too. I like that the developer strives for enabling tags, hashtags and flairs the users can group and customize.

It being part of the Fediverse means that it also can interact with Lemmy, hopefully better than Kbin/Mbin (communities hosted there where often not visible for Lemmy users or had image fetching errors). I hope it’ll be less authoritarian than .ml instances too, I can’t say much about the lead developer of Lemmy dessa, seems like they develop a few other apps that don’t really have any political leaning - but the others are very hard AuthLeft and very vocal about it. In an ideal online world, we’d see opinions from both sides of the spectrum as long as they follow common guidelines and rules, sort of an etiquette. Sort of like me being able to buy a fairly “normal” centrist newspaper or one by a more left-leaning or a more conservative/right-leaning news outlet. Let’s hope PieFed is more centrist - I like to keep things perfectly balanced.

Thanks for approving my application btw! 👍🏻

  • From the features listed alone, it seems like PieFed is ambitious to improve the Fediverse forum idea to a level of the old Reddit experience most of us knew. I kinda wish there was a Fediverse app that would include all of the communities and all content (except that which you block/blacklist/disable yourself) is visible. I like the concept of Matrix, where you sign up to the general service by picking a suitable server, then you can freely choose your app of choice - e.g. people on Element/Element X can still interact with those using FluffyChat. This is vastly different to the usual monopoly a messenger has over its userbase and - IMHO - a great step in the right direction for user friendly applications and processes. Since I want the Fediverse idea to succeed, I will try out PieFed. Since snooting mentioned that it’s supported by Voyager, I’ll try that. Thanks for your efforts!

  • Thank you very much for the explanation and the link to our webview version - turns out I had to access my full profile settings from my Firefox browser there. I was able to select “English” and also “Deutsch” (= german, my native tongue) together with the standard “Undetermined”. Unfortunately it couldn’t be done from my current app, but it worked pretty conveniently on my phone browser. Android phone with A 15 and the latest Firefox version for anyone wondering…

    • Brush: RazoRock Beehive 28 mm
    • Razor: Stando Perun; KAI Captain J-7 kamisori shavette
    • Blade: Personna Super; KAI Captain Protouch MG
    • Lather: Moon Soaps - Union
    • Post-Shave: OAM - sensitive skin toner; alum block; Benecos 3in1 moisturising & soothing ASB
    • Passes & Info: 2 passes on both head and face around a circle beard; good shave on the dome, dumpster fire on the face. 3 different post shave products should tell you enough…

So this shave was a pretty even 50/50. I thought I could finally get away with shaving on my face again, I really hoped it’d be the case. Trimming went well today, so I actually had a pretty solid shape of the circle beard to go by. Sadly, it was completely awful. I don’t know how I managed to cruise through a whole AA in 2022 with just this shavette. My muscle memory seems to be gone for the most part and I hoped this would be like riding a bike - once you know how to do it, you never lose it. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case here.

It didn’t help that most of Union’s smell has faded and it mostly smells like a cardboard box where a soap came in. It still had good glide and a nice pinch of menthol, my shaved head proves it. I thought it’d be a shame to leave this expensive KAI shavette lying around, gathering dust. But I should’ve spent some time re-learning the basics without a blade first. Despite the guarded blade, I caught lots of weepers and basically got every possible kind of irritation. Bleeding spots? Check. Redness and razor burn? Check. I’ll have to follow up with an antiseptic spray (alcohol free of course) and some panthenol cream before going to bed. And the shave wasn’t even that close. A massive FU on my part… At least I did my best to make this shave relaxing by listening to some ambient tunes again. I know there used to be a consensus that one should shave in complete silence to focus more on the razor feedback, but I think this is a bit more esoteric than actually helpful. I already have trouble focusing on a single task due to my ADHD, strangely ambient music helps me to do it while studying - and maybe it can help me appreciate shaving a bit more again?

My general plan is to get back into alternating between head and face shaves, since combination skin is a bitch and my dry skin parts could benefit from semi regular exfoliation and good aftershave products. Plus it’ll fix those glaring patchy growth on my right side being too visible. Apparently the “scruffy goat”, i.e. a full goatee with some light stubble around it is a real thing now, so I could easily go with 2-3 days between face shaves and continue to shave my head at least every other day to maintain the smooth look I prefer.

  • Schaffhausen used to be where my father stayed during his time as a tiler on assembly work in Switzerland. Nice part of the country with very friendly people around. We often visited the Rheinfälle, since it was just 5 minutes from the hotel where all the workers stayed. The surrounding area with its great nature makes for some nice hiking trips, definitely worth a visit. If Schwyzerdytsch is used, it doesn’t need any Trump or other names: it’s Ryfall then IIRC, spoken with an “ü” instead of a hard y. Even though I audibly chortled at “Rhizzfälle” 😂

    • Brush: RazoRock Beehive 28 mm
    • Razor: Stando Perun
    • Blade: Personna Super (USA) vs. Derby Premium (Turkey)
    • Lather: Jean & Len - Fresh Menthol, shaving paste (made by Meißner Tremonia)
    • Post-Shave: OAM - sensitive skin toner
    • Passes & Info: 2 pass head shave; 1 with each blade. Good and smooth shave.

Today I finally found the motivation to shave again - been going with electric trimmers lately but it just isn’t the same. I tried two things inspired by @walden@sub.wetshaving.social 's latest SOTD posts: first this shaving cream/paste made under license by Meißner Tremonia, and then a small “battle of the blades” from blades I found in my drawer.

While MTs pastes used to be harder creams that were even a bit harder than some artisan croaps (kinda like resin), this one got a little softer over time and was more like a shaving mousse. The scent is nothing to write home about: menthol, eucalyptus and that’s it. Kinda like an ointment for sore joints and muscles. While MT isn’t mentioned on the packaging anywhere, there are clear signs that it was made by them: the consistency of the product, the violet glass jar and last but not least the ingredient list matching perfectly to their paste. Unfortunately, MT has stopped making any soaps or pastes and only has some beard care products in their portfolio. I even suspect they went bankrupt, since there’s almost nothing available anymore. It’s sad.

For today’s small blade battle, I took one blade from an unmarked ziplock bag I found and a single Derby Premium. The blade in the plain white wrapper turned out to be a AccuTec Personna “Super” made in the USA. I guess it has some kind of coating, judging by the feeling of the shave. The Derby is kinda like a turkish basar of coatings: it seemingly has them all. Both are on the milder side, at least by my judgement. I did the first mostly WTG pass with the Personna, then the Derby, and some final cleanups with the Personna yet again. While this setup was perhaps not the best for a fair comparison, the Personna felt sharper while not sacrificing any mild feeling for it. So yeah, this is a narrow US win. Sadly I won’t get any more of these blades thanks to the tariffs enforced by President Cheeto. 😑 I also got rid of all russian blades I still had left. Don’t want to support a warmonger with future purchases, even though the russian population can’t do anything about their shitty leader and have to suffer for it.

Still, glad to be able to shave again - I love the smooth feeling of my dome!

  • Trying out a variety of different razor blades from all over the world is indeed fun - thanks to RBC, I tried a lot of the known ones but also the more exotic ones like Gillette Minora, Winner, and almost the entire range of Lord (Egypt) and Treet (Pakistan). The latter were my first contact with a fully black DE blade called “Black Beauty”. It was uncoated carbon steel, so it caught rust fairly quick but the shaves weren’t bad while it lasted. Now I am inspired to dig into my blade drawer and find some exotic ones to try out for my shave later - I’m all set with blades, but sometimes a little bit of experimenting can spark tons of fun!

  • Meißner Tremonia is a german artisan. While their “Strong ‘n’ Scottish” soap smells awful to me, they also licensed their “Triple Menthol” for a harder croap/shaving paste to another german cosmetics brand, Jean & Len. It’s really good but the cooling effect is strong with this one. I also had a sample of “Wild Oranges” which I also own in hand & body soap format. That’s definitely one of their best scents, a dark citrus blend of bitter, blood and sweet oranges. Unfortunately they don’t make shaving products anymore except aftershaves, nowadays they focus on beard care products and hand/body soap only…

    • Brush: AP Shave Co. black & clear handle w/ 30 mm Tuxedo Fan knot
    • Razor: RazoRock Cyber Medium w/ Superknurl handle
    • Blade: BIC Chrome Platinum
    • Lather: Southern Witchcrafts - GraveFruit II
    • Post-Shave: Southern Witchcrafts GraveFruit II AS
    • Passes & Info: single pass on head and face. A really solid shave, but some minor irritation on the face in the form of weepers.

Haven’t used this soap in a while and the beginning of August is a good opportunity for such a nice citrus scent. I’m really sorry that SW closed down, their scents were really bold and they had one of the best vegan bases ever created. Also, the only artisan afaik who only has alcohol-free toners as their aftershave and those are top notch too.

Seems like my face still hates shaving - while the dome didn’t mind blade contact after a day off, my face skin maybe dislikes shaving in general. It doesn’t even feel bad until after I rinse the remaining lather off, really weird…

    • Lather: Los Jabones de Joserra - Masala Connection
    • Post-Shave: Lavera Men sensitive ASB
    • Passes & Info: 1 pass on the dome, 2 on the face - felt smooth, but strong burn when applying the post-shave. 1 weeper on the neck.

Rainy day, so it was time for some cold weather scents. Masala Connection smells a bit more mature than I actually am, but I really enjoy those scent notes combined.

It seems like my skin needs a break from shaving tomorrow. While I used my mildest razor and the actual shave felt good, my skin burned when I applied the ASB lotion - and it’s alcohol-free. At least I had a nice 3 day streak. scratch that, I realised it was actually a 4-day streak!

    • Razor: Ever-Ready 1912 SE
    • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE
    • Lather: E&S Rasage - Shaman
    • Post-Shave: Lavera Men sensitive ASB
    • Passes & Info: 1 pass head & face around goatee; not very close nor comfortable

Trimmed my goatee really short so I also had to shave around it; unfortunately I paid with some redness/razor burn on the face for it. I guess the blade is at the end of its life cycle.

Shaman was really cool though, yet another nice tobacco scent with some fruity and woody notes. I really enjoy the new E&S base.

Day 2 at my new station (or more accurately, as I found out by finally researching in my fav german - english dictionary: residential area) was a bit harder, but manageable. Tomorrow will be more stressful - we’re only 4 staff members in the day shift due to a injured/sick colleague. Well - this too shall pass…

  • Unfortunately not yet - I still have one oral exam at the 26th of August and will receive my certificate by the 1st of September, but since I am “three quarters done” according to management, I already transferred to that station. It might also sound much more complex than it is: the nursing home where I work is small, each floor is its own station or in german “Wohnbereich” (literal translation = living space). Back in Jan. '24 when I started, I worked from the top floor (then) to the bottom floor (now). Apologies if all of this is hard to understand, my brain is kinda mushy from all the exhaustion atm

    • Razor: RazoRock Hawk V2 w/ Cyber handle
    • Blade: KAI Captain Protouch MG
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann - The Full Measure of Man
    • Post-Shave: OAM sensitive skin toner
    • Passes & Info: 1 pass on the head, 2 around the goatee; slightly rough feeling in some areas but very close shave.

I feel like I need to downgrade yesterday’s shave from “good” to “okay” - a few spots were simply not shaved very well. So for a minus in comfort but a plus in efficiency I chose the Hawk V2 today. A solid trade-off.

FMOM was as great as always. I’m really glad to own a few awesome tobacco soaps, one of my favourite scent notes.

Had my first shift on a new station: This one will also be my main one once the retraining is over on September 1st. The colleagues are very friendly and the residents seem to be more relaxed. Currently I feel a bit dumb since it’s a totally different work environment yet again, but let’s hope it continues to be nice.

  • I did use one by Sonax (german car accessories company) that’s actually for cars and car parts, but it seemed to work. Actually it was mostly for the Stando Perun: it’s a “stainless” steel razor, but nevertheless catched a good amount of rust on its top and base plate. I suspect that the artisan simply forgot to apply enough coating, since all of the Stando razors are hand-finished. I just applied some to the Greencult 2.0 and RR Cyber Medium too since they were also cleaned thoroughly by me 🤷🏻‍♂️
