Up is subjective and arbitrary. It implies that there is a strict and clear hierarchy to oppression, discrimination, and marginalization and ignores intersectionality. If a black woman is shitty to a disabled white woman, is she punching up or down? How do you weigh the different traits that lead to marginalization? Who’s above who? How does this change as conditions change (for example racism in China vs racism in America). And in the end, what goal is it helping you achieve? Is it an effect strategy to achieve that goal? In the end, there is a more complex situation at play here that can’t be boiled down to “you’re above me so it is okay for me to be shitty to you.”

Its not me trying to protect IP, its me standing in solidarity with artists. They need jobs like everyone else and I feel using AI is enabling corporations to take those jobs. Its an issue of right now we live under capitalism and need to help each other survive, and AI is hurting artists. Once capitalism is gone and artists don’t need to work to survive I have no issue with AI being used cause you aren’t hurting anyone anymore. I do not feel you can be in solidarity with artists and writers and also use generative AI as a medium as opposed to a tool.

I feel a good example is the Luddite movement. Industrialization can be good, especially in terms of reducing labor and increasing productivity. But in a capitalist world it comes with people losing their jobs and thus means to survival. The workers sabotaging the machinery were doing it because their jobs were at stake, not some moral issue with the tool. The tools are immoral because of how they affect people. Until you can get rid of that affect, it is immoral to use it. If we want to use GenAI we need capitalism gone. We need to work in the reality that exists presently, not the ideal future.

You’re example is a good case of using AI well. However I think there is a difference between using AI to help with something, and using AI for the whole thing. I have no qualms with using AI to ease or automate the tedious work, but using it for the whole thing is gross, lazy, and often times scabbing. For example I love Romantically Apocalyptic. Its artists uses an AI trained off of his own art to speed up the process of making art for his books. The images are not 100% AI generated, and what is generated is made from his own art. This I feel is a good use of AI in art. A bad use of AI art is training a model off of other people’s art and generating a whole image out of it. Until we live in a society where artists and writers don’t need to work to survive, we can’t ethically use AI to generate whole works using other people’s work imo.

Yall tend to forget that not everyone lives in cities (or even well developed cities), and not everyone wants to. Sure yeah your idea is good for those living in well developed cities and want to live in them. But those of us who don’t really do need to own a car. Public transport is not a one size fits all, and yall need to stop pretending like it is.

How does the state/police/etc protect me now? They are reactive, they only come after the crime is committed. The time I needed protection and help was 10-20 minutes ago. It would be a lot more efficient to take the resources that go to police and instead put them to use addressing reasons for crime like access to food, shelter, education, and healthcare, breaking down toxic societal issues like misogyny, ableism, queerphobia, toxic masculinity, racism, etc, and establishing effective conflict resolution. And as a last resort having a community defense, where everyone participates in the protection of the community, not just a militarized elite.

That would be my response.

Edit: plus peasants worked fewer hours in a day for a few reasons. Yes part of it is just the seasonality of farming, but reaping and sowing are not the only aspects to that job. They worked fewer hours for reasons like the fact the clock hadn’t been invented yet and so the owning class had a harder time enforcing strict schedules and work was built more around a natural rhythm. Also medieval peasants had a lot more housework and upkeep they needed to do outside of work. Repairing and mending clothing, the house, prepping food, washing clothes and dishes, and all without things like sewing machines, washing and drying machines, and modern ovens.

We CAN work more, we do not NEED to work more. We already overproduce everything. What you want is growth for the sake of growth, which is a self-destructive economic philosophy. We could easily drop to a 4 hour work day and still meet demand.

Facts. I live in Maine. I dare anyone that says to ban cars to come live here without one. The only form of public transportation here is a very shitty public bus system. If you live outside of its route, you are shit out of luck. Its why you have a lot of old people driving here that honestly should have had their license revoked a decade ago. Can’t take their license away cause they will have no way to access the resources they need to survive. But shouldn’t let them keep their license cause they are a major danger on the roads.

Technology and industrialization has and continues to increase an individual’s productivity exponentially. With increasing productivity we should be living better lives while being able to work less. Not equivocal or even more. The issue is capitalist economics are about over-production and constant growth, not meeting need. We’d still be living in candle-lit brick apartment complexes with your extended family in a studio apartment working 15 hours in the coal mines if it wasn’t for labor unions and violent resistance. Then they found out they can pacify people easier through consumerism than they could with the barrel of a gun.

This is all to say, we do not need to work as much as we are to keep the quality of life we have.
