  • Well liberals think reading a book ghost written by Hillary Clinton IS a book. I wish liberals would do a little more to educate themselves on leftist theory so they can at least realize that what they are promoting isn’t leftist at all. I don’t really expect that to happen though. It’s not like you are going to see Liberals toting around Kropotkin, Goldman or even Marx. They are too indoctrinated into capitalism to bother reading anything that conflicts with the belief that capitalism is the best way to organize a government… And if they can’t get over that hurdle, imagine what finding out there are people that don’t believe in having a government at all will do to them. They still think police are a necessary evil… They can’t comprehend that the modern American police force was born out of slave patrols. They would probably have no problem with the fact that private prisons exist, because they haven’t broken down why capitalism is bad yet, which in many ways would be a precursor to understanding why we shouldn’t have private prisons, or even have prisons at all. They were happy with the status quo, or they just wanted to be included in the status quo. Truly challenging it, fighting for it’s abolition and destruction are just not ever going to be on the table for the average liberal. It sucks. I know there is a tendency to think we can educate our way out of the current crises, but you can’t really. How do you show somebody who is invested in the current system, that as soon as you create police you have set yourself down the road towards fascism and there are no off ramps? They didn’t get it during the Weimar republic despite placing a high value on academia and philosophy and they don’t get it now that we are repeating history almost exactly as it unfolded the last time. For each Nazi archetype there is a current match in Trumps inner circle. Stephen Miller is cosplaying Himmler, Hegseth is cosplaying Gehring and so on. In this case, history isn’t just rhyming, it’s immitating the past and since liberals seem to have never read a history book, they don’t seem to have a clue. Even Trump reads his history, he keeps a copy of mein kampf on his night stand. Does that stop liberals from openly collaborating with Trump on his agenda? Maybe we should ask Gavin Newsom who has spent his entire tenure as Governer promoting Trumps agenda. Maybe we should ask Kamala Harris who spent her time as VP advocating for mass deportations using ICE in a similar way as Trump. Neoliberalism and Fascism aren’t really that far from each other. If they could get over their squabbles over guns and abortions, then liberals would basically be holding fascisms pecker when it pees.

  • I mean, if you are into Metal, https://en.metal-tracker.com/ and an airsonic server will get you pretty far. anarcho-punk.net can help suppliment that. If you like other forms of music, it can be harder. I often have to resort to using a downloader to get files from youtube. Sometimes you can find things on the postman tracker using i2p. The current state of torrenting is pretty much shit compared to what it used to be, but that is because most people settled for spotify. If you value quality music, from quality artists, you should pay them for their work. If that means buying a record or a tape from somebody, then you should consider investing in that sort of media. If it means downloading, you can always look on bandcamp or the many alternatives that now exist both on and off the fediverse (bandwagon is a cool new fediverse option). There are a lot of great bands just giving away their music online. Maybe consider sometimes paying them for what they do if you are like me and you can’t afford to always pay everybody all the time. Spotify makes things cheap and easy and thats why you are getting massive amounts of AI slop music being uploaded now. It just isn’t worth it as a real musician to put your music on there anymore. So until we as music lovers decide that it’s worth supporting artists in some new way, things are only going to get worse and we are going to have to put up with a lot of shitty platforms making shitty choices for shitty reasons. The first step is having this realization that spotify and youtube are shitty… not just to artists but to users. But if you want to really be able to enjoy music again, it probably involves finding a way to directly pay artists for their work while cutting out as many middlemen as possible. I highly suggest building a library of your own. It isn’t the cheapest thing in the world. You might have to buy a few hard drives to make sure things are backed-up, maybe a raspberry pi to run it all on and depending on how technical you are, you might have to learn some new skills in order to run it all, but with that setup running an airsonic server and the subsonic app on your phone, you can listen to your own music(and podcast) collection from anywhere. It’s worth the effort in my opinion. You could even run airsonic as a tor hidden service if you want (then you don’t have to even punch any holes in your routers firewall).

  • This is great and I appreciate the push to move content over to Peertube. There are a lot of issues with youtube that go beyond just ads. There is a huge moderation problem. For one, there are so many fake DIY videos now. I used to go on there to learn how to do things, but seeing the devolution into ad-supported content that exists soley for the purpose of monetization, spreading completely false information to people is really sad. You can’t trust anything on there. None of it has been vetted by people who know what they are talking about at all and there is no reasonable process for removal of such videos. At least Peertube, you could change instances or if you run an instance you could defederate from bad actors on the platform. Peer Tube is an amazing platform and is incredibly under-utilized.

  • Airsonic music server… There are a few quirks getting it all set up properly, but once it works, it just seems to work forever. Samba file sharing server. Also miniDLNA server can make it easy to watch your movie collection on a tv. The airsonic DLNA doesn’t seem to be working currently. I also have a few mastodon bots running from a Pi4. Also could run a tor relay node, which would make it so it’s less idle. I have a lot of stuff on my Pi4 and it is still mostly idle most of the time. Thats fine though. For me it’s not a huge problem, since overall, my goal is to make it use as little power as possible for all those things. I think thats the whole point is to really use the most lightweight computer that can do what you need. If you just need the print server, you could always get a lower power Pi so you can really optimize how much power needs to be used and maybe even do some sort of Wake on LAN setup so it can be sleeping while not in use.

  • You could always have Graphene over WiFi as your main phone and then have a dumb phone you take in the car with you for emergencies. I had a cellphone running Graphene and it died and I just got a dumb phone and I went back to using my computer for everything else now. It’s mostly a better workflow for me. I think the main way it becomes problematic is most jobs require you to have a smart phone so they can do payroll and tracking you through apps. I really don’t want that and I have been fortunate enough that I have been getting enough work independently now that I can decide what I do and don’t need in that regard. If that is your situation, you could always keep the I-phone for shit like that and have a place to put it when you are done with work… So you can disengage with the phone once you are not working. Then get a Graphene phone for your leisure time. There doesn’t have to be set rules that you can only do one thing or the other.
