I decided to edit all of my comments to say that I left Reddit in protest and provide a link to the Fediverse. If I leave the comments up when I delete my account, can Reddit edit them back to what they originally were? Should I just delete them?
I plan to write over comments, unsubscribe from all subs, but then leave my account open for a month or two to monitor for reddit reverting my comments back to original.
No idea what reddit is going to do, but this was the way that made sense to me to signal a shift (unsubscribing from subs) while still being able to react to any fuckery with my comments.
It probably really doesn’t matter. Even if I edit/delete comments and that’s what the public sees, reddit still has my original comments somewhere and can sell it to LLMs.
Hey, look on the bright side: LLMs might not want to pay API fees, and then Reddit will just have to sit on its unsold data like a hen.
… anyway, I left my account open for the same reason. I don’t think it makes much difference to them whether their user count decreases by one, and I want to be able to hop back on and delete anything they restore. Whether it affects them or not, I feel better with my stuff deleted.
Are you doing that by hand? Or is there some bot for it?
@Tar_alcaran I did it by hand, but I had deleted my 10 year account a couple months ago for unrelated reasons so I didn’t have many comments.
Yes, Reddit can restore your comments after you delete your account. It might be better to keep your account for a little while, so if they do that, you can change your comments back.
@sanctuary_sanctuary Yes… looking at the past history of Reddit actions. Reddit is constantly restoring threads and comments. Even deleted ones. Which is against various privacy protection acts.
can Reddit edit them back to what they originally were?
Yes.
Should I just delete them?
They can restore deleted comments too.
